    just curious everyone's thoughts on aging porters. I know stouts and sours can hold up fairly well if properly cellared, but do porters? Any experience with them and is it recommended to keep them around a while?

    I've got a few Spiteful porters I'd consider hanging on to (vanilla, toffee, coffee), and I imagine the adjuncts might fade a bit but will they be gross/flavorless?

    In my experience, mostly with Foudners Porter, they hold up longer than other styles, but still start showing signs of oxidation at ~1-1.5 years.

    Porter = Stout, so yes...

    Aged a Shipwreck Porter from Arcadia for two years and it tasted great! Note** It's also 12% abv so I'm sure that helped the aging process

    The real dictator on aging a porter is the ABV in my opinion. ABV > 8% has a shot because that is rightfully a stout. It is the branding of beer that makes this a grey area.

    Agreed on Shipwreck. I am sitting on 6 and they are fantastic aged.

    I'm stashing a few extra cans of 4 Beans from sixpoint (10%) to see how they age. Probably open one every six months until they are gone.

    I would not recommend aging coffee beers in general. 3Beans aged rather poorly in my experience, but maybe the other additive(s) in 4Beans will allow it to hold up longer.

    Not expecting it to necessarily improve or for the coffee to hold up. Mainly just to see what happens.

    Drinking a Great Lakes Brewing Co. Edmund Fitzgerald Porter right now. It has a best by date of June 2014, making it one year and four months over. I aged this, but not by design. Tastes pretty good, but certainly "older". Hard to discern exactly as I am lacking a control bottle for side by side.

    Carnegie Porter is perfection at a decade. I never would have thought a 5.5% would hold up, but damn it did.

    For the examples mentioned in the OP, I would personally not age them and that is just my .02. I find the coffee/vanilla/etc. tend to fade with time and that is what is being showcased so to me it doesn't make much sense but to each his own. Porters in general though I would treat the same way as I would stouts as they are pretty much one in the same (lets not let this turn into a "difference between porter and stout" thread as there are plenty of those already out there.)

    I wonder about something like No Rules...huge ABV, but lots of adjuncts as well...

    had a 9 month Victory at Sea last evening. Very enjoyable beer. the Coffee seems to fade, but the Vanilla is more forward.. Cannot wait to see what the taste is with another year on it.

    Spiteful definitely preaches the "fresh is best" mantra and I think this would especially hold true for the Pigeon variations (how I'd hate to miss all that delicious toffee sweetness). If you wanna cellar them for the sake of seeing what will happen, go for it, but I'd expect them to fall off. The adjuncts already lack the hops of the base Pigeon, so you may just end up with an enjoyable porter if you give them time.

    That's a 10% beer quite a bit different than a normal porter. Where is the date on the bottles? I just bought some and can't find it.
