I just cracked open a year-old bottle of Lake Louie's Reserve Scotch ale, which has been sitting at the back of my fridge. Lake Louie beers are unpasteurized. It tasted like something that might be considered a very good sour beer, so it wasn't the taste I was expecting. Is this normal? Should I not even try aging unpasteurized beer? Is it safe to drink?

    1) not normal. something went wrong with the beer.

    2) completely safe to drink. the alcohol kills anything that wanted to kill you.

    3) completely fine to age unpasteurized beer. most people would say it's preferable that the beer be unpasteurized so there's still some live yeast in there to do weird shit to the beer.

thanks - should unpasteurized beer be treated any differently than pasteurized beer in terms of cellaring/aging? I've always read that unpasteurized beer should always be kept cold and that seems to be true for at least the lower ABV ones.
