I'm assuming a bunch of guys on here are members of American Homebrewers Association. Is it worth it for the $40+/year membership? Just started home brewing and I'm debating on joining.
I've been a member for years. I think it's money well spent. I enjoy flipping through the pages of Zymurgy, and the member discounts at local brewpubs are a bonus. You also have to be a member (or guest of a member) if you ever want to buy tickets for the NHC (worth going at least once if it's ever in a city near you). If you're still on the fence, they occasionally have special 'gifts' for joining. Promo pricing on books, free glassware, etc. Keep an eye out, and maybe you can score some swag when you join.
Another benefit of AHA is discounts at local establishments. For example the Iron Hill Brewpubs give a 20% discount on beer and food and I recoup my 40 bucks every year right there. I also regularly attend the NHC which is a wonderful experience both from an educational and social context. Cheers!
I've found it worth it. The membership probably pays for itself with the 10% discount I get at my local homebrew store, plus the discount I get at some local taprooms (when I actually remember that the darn discount exists). Zymurgy is a worthwhile magazine. And I've only attended one National Homebrewers Conference, but it was fantastic.
Nothing to add, but to reiterate you make back the money in savings (at least I do). The magazine is a great bonus. Oh, here's one... you also get to pre-purchase tix to GABF before they go on sale to the public. And you have to be a member to enter the NHC. If there are breweries local to you, sometimes they'll do AHA Rallys. Depending on the brewery, there are some nice perks with that one.
You can also pre-order books at a discount when the book is published. If you are not in a hurry, you can order a little cheaper on Amazon later. Homebrew Con (NHC), GABF, Rallies, the Members Deals at participating establishments, discounts at many Homebrew shops, and so on. I get my investment back and then some. If you register online, there is an option for e-Zymurgy only that saves $5. I like having the print magazine in my hands. There are also a few sections on the website that have member only content, so that is for conference presentations and NHC winning recipes (that was recent).
Don't listen to hopfenunmaltz, he's just a shill for the man. Listen to me, I'm even bigger shill! (Seriously, both of us are one the AHA Governing Committee.) Naturally I think it's worth it but then again I do a lot of work with the org and they print a lot of my stuff, so... I might be a biased observer. Beyond just the direct monetary value, I would also encourage joining because of the lobbying and rights work the org helps out with all across the country.
That may be the first time I have ever been called a shill for the man! In this case I will take that label. Edit - if you go to many Homebrew Cons (NHCs) you will have the opportunity to meet and rub elbows with all of the well known homebrewers. "A" listers like Drew, and "D" listers like me.
I'm not in the same league as Drew. Just a take off on Kathy Griffon's routine. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kathy_Griffin:_My_Life_on_the_D-List
Thanks for all of the responses. I tried to sign up and it said I was being charged $155 when the site says $43 to join. I emailed the company my concerns. Maybe I misread something?
$155? You definitely added something else to the cart, or signed up for multi-years, or something. Not sure it still works this way, but if you sign up at a Rally, they knock $5 off ($38).
