    Because, *how* many breweries are there in Monroe? :thinking_face::wink:

    And it's supposedly the second-oldest brewery in the United States behind only Yuengling. What a shame.

    Well... I think there's a little place in your state that might dispute that claim.

    Yeah -- so I guess they claim 1845 & Schell is 1860. But I guess same owners over that time is a little more prestigious. Beware if Minhas starts nosing around New Ulm!

    @jesskidden -- Huber second oldest?

    Well, there is some confusion about the actual date of the founding of the original brewery in Monroe:

    But there's also the common usage of the terms "brewery" and "brewing company" to mean the same thing but, obviously, they don't. Schell says they are the "the second-oldest family-owned brewery in the United States" (I once told Dave Berg, Schell brewmaster, they should get rid of the "second-oldest" and go with something like: "The Oldest American brewery west of the Alleghenies..." :grin:).

    OTOH, the brewery in Monroe has had numerous owners - not much connection between the brewing companies of the Canadian Minhas family and Bissinger ... or was it Kinpschilt? ... or Blumer or even Huber (except owning the brand names), other than geographical location (doubt much physical evidence of the original brewery is still around, either). There own book kinda glosses over the brewery's history - going from 1845 to Prohibition in 1920 in two sentences. :astonished:

    If they're going to stick with 1845 as the year of the founding, Pabst Brewing Co.'s got them beat (1840) BUT, of course, they've changed owners a handful of times and even gone nearly two decades lately without owning a brewery - still a "brewing company", tho'.
