Don't overlook their Maibock. It's a very good example of the style.

I have yet to check out Aldi's, however I do hit TJ's on occasion but I'm not impressed by their beer. I have been a Binnny's fan for quite some time, but now we have a new Woodmans in the neighborhood, all the beer is refrigerated, (I know some overstock is still on floor,) and the prices are 10-15% better. I will give Aldi's a look see though.

The Stout and Irish Red are seasonal, as is the Maibock mentioned. Wernesgrüner, brewer of the Pils, also makes a great Dark sold by Aldi, but is also seasonal.

The Maibock brewer, Feldschloßchen, also brews an good Urbock and Dunkelweizen that show up at Aldi from time to time. @PapaGoose03

I went to an Aldi in Niles, IL. (on the north side of Touhy Ave., which will be very close to where Une Annee wants to open its taproom), and the beer which I bought was Third Street Brewhouse's Oktoberfest Session Marzen (4.6% ABV - 16 oz can - 4/$5.99). Oh wow. It was spectacular. I went to another Aldi closer to the abode here (on Diversey Ave across from the Walmart) looking to buy more of it, but it had already sold out of it and now had two other Third Street Brewhouse beers: Lost Trout Brown Ale (5½% ABV) - yes, this was O.K.; and Sugar Shack Maple Stout (6½% ABV) - ehhh... no. :frowning: I dumped the other cans at the Chicago Beer Society's 'Thurst Firsday' where it was also generally ignored (because this was the night we had a vertical of Bourbon County Stout) But the price was right. And I'll go far to get the Third Street | Cold Spring Brwy. to brew more beers than other beverages. :yum:
I did buy the 6-pack of Wernesgruner Dark. It is in the beer cellar downstairs too.
The photograph above shows the dedicated area for Aldi's beers, ciders, & seltzers. But the 16-oz cans from Third Street Brwy. are sometimes at an endpoint kiosk near the check-out lanes.

I wasn't such a fan of that one, I believe I reviewed it pretty unfavorably.

I'm surprised that Märzen is still on the shelves. It has to be old.

My wife got me some of it last year and I was surprised by it. I think that I looked favorably on it because I had extremely low expectations. It was better than I thought it would be.

I still have a few bottles from the case of Hacker-Pschorr I got from Costco last year. It's still great.

Feels like a weird location for that kind of stuff.

Picked up a sixer of this stuff just yesterday ... nothing disappointing about it.

I had two Wernesgruner Pils today. They were quite good.

I was in my Aldi's neighborhood, stopped by to check for O'Shea's (brewed by O'Hara's) beers that were mentioned here. Unfortunately no stout, but I did pick up a 4pk of the red ale (4.3% ABV). A nice mahogany-hued ale, smells of toffee and biscuit, pours a billowing head and then dissipates quickly. Taste is of coffee, candy sugar (melanoiden) and it drinks quite easily. The bittering is a bit heavy handed, maybe that's true to style. It certainly is more bitter than a Smithwick's for example....it's a little annoying on the palate to be honest, and the aftertaste of weird bitterness persists. All in all a decent Irish red, not sure I'll buy again but I will be looking out for the stout.

I saw this in our Aldi preview flyer for next week. Definitely on the lookout for it.

I drop by for their German beer selection.

No, let me rephrase that, I make a point of dropping by for their German beer selection.

    Wonder if it's "seasonal?"

I have seen the Licher hefeweizen there before. I've had Licher hefeweizen fresh (used to live close to the brewery and it was the local favorite), it's a solid brew. They used to sell Franzikaner together with Licher (cooperation on contracts), so when they split after AB purchase, they tried to make a clone.

At my age, and after 3 years? I think I could be forgiven.
