Pun intended? This is true most of the time, but I am sure Peter and the folks at Alesmith would not procure beans from a source that operated that way. Heck, maybe that is what's driving the high price. Either way it's a bit high for me and I'll be passing on this one.

I was set on buying one of these as I've never had a Kopi beer, but you guys are really making some strong points here.

Is there a locally available beer that uses Kopi so I can try one without buying this?

i feel similarly. it's true that it's overpriced. i've only had it once in the taproom though and was pretty blown away. would be willing to buy a bottle, even at that pice, to be honest

That's what I'm going to do. I love AleSmith and buy most of their special releases, and hope I get to try this sometime, but the price is just too high for what it is.

The location of the roaster has little impact on the price of the roasted coffee, that's akin to saying that a dish with truffles at a local restaurant should be cheap because it's local. I'm not defending the cost of the beer, but Mostra being in San Diego does nothing to negate the cost of the green coffee beans.

Time is the killer for me, more than the price. I just don't have the time for a 6 hour round time to the brewery to pick up one bottle of beer. I wish they had a Flex-Shipper option like The Bruery does.

As for the price, yes its expensive, but I would buy a bottle if it was distributed or they shipped it. I like Alesmith, Miikkeler and Oatmeal Stouts enough to buy one bottle.

More than one? That would be based on my impression of the first bottle, along with having the opportunity for a second shot at buying ( which isn't an option )

They'll have it on at their release party.

Mikkeller was using a supplier that was actually picking them up in the wild. But the website of that supplier went down a few months ago. I'm very curious myself where are those beans coming from.
And yes, I also think that $25 for a non-BA stout is a joke.

Can't edit, so just adding here, here's the clarification on the 2nd paragraph from the newsletter:

"Mostra sourced and roasted the %100 wild cage-free Sumatran Kopi Luwak beans"

I may grab a bottle or two. It better be worth the $25. Honestly I don't remember paying more than $20 for any non-BA beer, not just the stout.

Te fact AleSmith is allowing proxies says plenty regarding the $25 price.

The insane part will be when all the bottles sell out thanks to traders with more money than sense.

Assuming the cage free and 100% wild part is true which since I'm not over there taking notes I guess I have to believe then I will buy a couple of bottles even with the high price. If possible we all should all buy products, that if they use the flesh or disturb the soul of an animal are responsibly sourced.

I like where this is going!

I prefer the weasel shit that resulted in $18 bottles of Kopi Speedway, not this fancy stuff that made the price so much higher. Or is it adding the Mikkeller name causing that difference?

    Precisely.

I was scratching my head, trying to figure out what Mikkeller would offer to a collaboration with Alesmith on an imperial stout. Occam's razor, as well as logic, suggests that a $7 price bump would be just that.
