Not too long ago i had a roughly 2 year aged Old Numbskull, when i took off the foil on the bottle there was a considerable amount of rust on and around the cap. I figured it was an anamoly and worked my way around it, consumed the beer (terrific btw), and went on my merry way. A couple weeks ago i open my 1 year aged Speedway Stout and i get the same thing......huh.....did the same, consumed it....loved the beer. So today im reviewing my cellar and out of interest i remove the foil on my 2014 decadence (only 4 or so months old)....and there is rust!!!! Why? Is anyone else having this problem? Out of concern i took the foil off my 8 month old Olde Ale and there was rust on it too. I just dont get it. I love these beers but i also love aging them, and this rust thing is killin me.
Maybe it has to do with where you are storing the beers? Do you live near the Atlantic shore (maybe salt water issue)? You've got me worried about my Speedway and BA Speedway I'm sitting on!
I can totally hear what your saying, and thats basically what i chalked up the first two occurances to.....but the 2014 decadence? its like 4-5 months old....and only in my cellar for 1 month...previously it was stored in a refridgerated section of my local beer store Just for the record my cellar is in a half basement of a split level, stays around 55 degrees, and low humidity due to size and de-humidifier
I understand the concept of rust....what im trying to figure out is why 4 bottles of 1 brewery in my basement have rust when 90+ other bottles....(some at 5 years) dont!
I have always wondered the same thing and I was told by many beer advocates that it was due to the foil wrapping that they use on the bottles
Con den sation sation sation on on my got me wine.cooler works great 250$ controlled temp' humidity for the more pricey beers you find them on Craigslist for 25 buck I would go that route !!! Cheers and good luck with rust
That would be my guess. Condensation underneath the foil causing the cap to rust on the underside where it is raw(unfinished) metal.
I believe it has to do with the foil...I get a case of Pelican Mother of all Storms every year and they have foil on them. I find each cap with some rust on it whenever I crack one open.
One brewery might likely mean they are re-using cap which sat in sani and weren't dried before being put away, that is if they have the ghetto fabulous bomber filler that can be put together for a couple hundred bucks. Working this way, I see rust on bottlecaps whenever I didn't get them all dry from a previous run when I bottle up some home-brew. A more common thing though that happens to everything that is cold in warm humid weather is that it might also mean they were packaged at a time when it was humid and they sat to sweat it out while coming to temperature. If they get foiled when cold, which is likely. That moisture has no place to go! i.e. it rusts.
The foil holds in any moisture (beer, sanitizer or the adhesive for the wrapper itself) that may be left there during the bottling process and results in the rust. It is not limited to one brewery, any brewery using this packaging method are susceptible to it.
I have a 2 year old barrel aged speedway stout and no rust. I have the jamaican, vietnamese, vietnamese barrel aged and as well nothing out of the ordinary
