Im thinking about ordering an all grain kit from like Northern Brewer or somewhere. Can I order the kit and use what they give me to do BIAB? Or do I need to change some things. New to all grain so anything will help. I think I'm making it harder than what it actually is haha
Depends on your set up. Mostly Kettle size I would say. But short answer would be Yes that should be OK.
What size kettle do you have? For 5 gallon BIAB you would need at least an 8 gallon kettle and 10 would be better. As far as the kit goes, it will work fine for BIAB but if you are doing a full volume mash your efficiency may suffer a bit. This is mainly because of a generic coarse crush from the kit maker and the lack of a sparge. You can boost your efficiency by doing a dunk sparge. This is how I do it on my system. Mash with 2/3 of the total water volume. During the mash heat the other 1/3 of your water. When you're done mashing pull the bag and let it drain for a minute. Move the bag to a bucket and pour your sparge water over the grains and stir well. Let it sit in that sparge water for 10 minutes stirring maybe once a minute to really rinse the grain. Pull the bag and squeeze it like it owes you money. Combine the liquid in the bucket with what's already in the kettle and move on to your boil.
