Hey everyone. I'm fairly new to homebrewing. I have a few extract brews under my belt and am beginning to dream of making the switch to all-grain. Just wondering if anyone has the time or desire to show me some pictures of all of their implements with a bit about their experience in making the shift and things like how difficult it was. It would be much appreciated! Thanks.
The OP may want to consider brew-in-a-bag, aka BIAB. That's how I transitioned into all-grain brewing, and that's still my primary method of brewing. Need more info? Here's a link: http://beersmith.com/blog/2009/04/14/brew-in-a-bag-biab-all-grain-beer-brewing/
Check out this article http://byo.com/newbrew/all-grain I read that and then watched some videos on YouTube. Brewed my first all grain batch last weekend and it went very well. Good luck
This video is actually what I used in order to transition to all grain. I've had three batches ever since, with one batch winning the "People's Choice" award at a contest this summer.
Sones, have you watched any of Donosborn's youtube videos? I'm like you; I've done a couple extract brews but will be making the move to all-grain next month. The Palmer video posted above is fantastic. The Donosborn stuff is less detailed and may make first timers like you and me less intimidated by all the stuff that could "go wrong". He just gives a quick simple approach to it all. Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/user/donosborn
If I were aware of BIAB, it may have been my entry point into all-grain brewing. As it was, I went with a batch sparge approach that I also think was pretty easy. http://hbd.org/cascade/dennybrew/ This article inspired me to build my own cooler system, although I made a manifold.
I just purchased my first home brew kit ever yesterday (used from Craigslist), and it came with a mash tun so I'm going to skip the extracts and try the all grain method to start my brew career. I hope it's as easy as the vids make it seem. I'm really excited to get into this hobby
