I am looking for help creating a recipe around some hops that i have on order. I have 4oz Willamette Pellet Hops & 1oz Cascade Pellet Hops on the way. Open for all suggestions. 1st post...I know, I have 3 all grain BIAB batches under my belt and need some help creating a grain bill. Thanks! Ryan
It really doesn't matter. The 3 batches I've brewed have been a Scotch Ale, RIS and an IPA. Open for any suggestions. Thanks!
Okay, so you have a bunch of Willamette hops, which are american hops, but really have more of an English character. Maybe an English Brown Ale or a Bitter?
Is that ALL the hops you have for this batch? 1 oz cascade, 4 oz willamette? I personally think those two hops go great together, so you'll be fine, even if that's all the hops you have. But "what kind of beer do you want to brew?" comes to my mind as well. edit: hahahaha beaten to it.
Here's a grain bill from my favorite Northern English Brown... 87% Crisp Maris Otter 10% Briess 2-row caramel 80 0.2% Crisp Black Malt, 550L 3% Crisp Chocolate, 412L I know they add up to 100.2%. Rounding is a bitch, but the important thing to note is the touch of Black Malt (do not read as 2.0%). Astute readers will notice a resemblance to a certain brown ale clone. I shoot for an OG around 1.054.
My best IPA yet (tho it's close with the APA IPA) is a cascade / willamette IPA. I keep meaning to make that one again, but I'm on a different kick at the moment. It will get made fairly soon tho. Too good not to.
How about a bitter? Something like the following sounds good and it would be a pretty quick beer from grain to glass. 10lbs Maris Otter .5lb Crystal 60 1 oz Willamette at 60 1 oz Willamette at 20 1 oz Willamette at 10 1 oz each willamette and cascade at flameout Wyeast 1968

Now how bitter would this be? Don't want to look like the guy from the "Bitter Beer Face" commercials!
You know what...I think this would be a good contender. Now how bitter would this be? Don't want to look like the guy from the "Bitter Beer Face" commercials! Not too bitter. For a 5.5 gallon batch at 75% efficiency you would have an og of 1.053 and with 5% AA hops you will have around 35ibus. Should be similar to SN pale ale as far as bitterness goes. The wyeast 1968 will mute the bitterness a little too compared to 1056/001
The term bitter is somewhat of a misnomer when it comes to the beer style. Actually they're not all that bitter, especially not compared to American IPA standards.
I agree that bitter is somewhat of a misleading name, but I'd also say that the logical comparison would be to APAs and American Ambers rather than IPAs.
