I love brewing beer. I would do it daily if I knew I could make as much money at it as my current job. Would love to open a small brewery/beer pub if I could.... Anyone else out there feel the same? I research recipes, create my own on beersmith, and play around with food menus, decor, special release beer events in my head all the time if i had my own place. I love beer.....

+1 . I dream with my own brewing company and brew-pubs every once in a while.Sadly ,I am too old to start all from the beginning.

I think about it all the time but realize that owning my own brewery will not happen unless I stumble across a ton of money and do not need a source of income for the rest of my life.

Yes. Similar to OddNotion's post above, I won't start a brewery unless I'm already financially set/safe. Planning on starting up a Biotech Company in a couple months, so the hope is that I can roll its profits into a brewery down the line. We can all dream, right?!

I agree- I wonder though if some just started as risks though- like FFF, darkhorse, founders etc....

Great hobbys often make the worst jobs.

I would imagine that starting any business is risky, particularly in the food and beverage world. For every FFF, Darkhorse, and Founders, there has to be 10 breweries* that are barely, if at all, staying open.

    *pure speculation

Oh, no doubt. If I could find a rich distant relative to bankroll the project for like a mil, that would be big fat titties.

It is possible that our love for brewing could turn into an insane drama if we try to make it a profitable work.Last week I was in La Plata city(capital of Buenos Aires province(Argentina´s most important province)) chatting with the Falkner Micrbrewery owner. He told me he struggles so hard to make his brewery stand open, fixed costs and Trade Union problems give him enormous headaches. The very problem is to brew more beer to low down fixed costs, but there is not a big market to sell a relative more expensive product.
So ,I think that I should be very young to start to fight against all these demons.

I do think about it a lot. Like Tebuken, I feel too old to start over. Furthermore, I would make a lousy business person. Cashing in my lifesavings to run a brewey is courting financial ruin. Maybe someday I'll wake up with a different perspective, but the clock is ticking.

That's my issue. I do dream about having a small brewery but I wonder how long I'll enjoy brewing if it becomes a daily grind.

Along these same lines, I have often said of (home)brewing, "If I were getting paid for this, it wouldn't be any fun."

You may have an easier time at this point finding VCs for a brewery.

Maybe if I was 20 years younger and single... Opening my own brewery is the subject of many a daydream, but do I really want to double the hours I work and cut my income in half (at least for the first 2-3 years)? My family would not be pleased and they would be right.

My adjusted daydream is to enjoy a short career as a nanobrewer after retirement, until the nursing home comes calling. Assuming my pension is not somehow negated, breaking even and having fun doing it would be just fine.

A guy here did it and then sold, as he got tired of the 14 hour days.

My wife and I have talked about retiring to the French country side and opening a brewpub/rib joint, on a small scale. It could still happen but it won't be something we rely on for paying the bills.

About 8 hours a day, Monday through Friday, all I want to do is brew.

If I brewed for a living, I'm sure there is another hobby I would think about during the workday. Like sitting at a desk stressing over software release schedules, adminstrative tasks and bullshit paperwork. :grinning:

You know that if you brew for a living you will have beer production/release timing, administrative tasks (raw material orders, product shipping, etc) and bullshit paperwork (taxes, TTB forms, etc)? It becomes a business.

If you brew for a living, you don't necessarily have to worry about that stuff. If you own a brewery, then you have to worry about it. Jamil said it best in Brew Strong progasm. If you want to brew for a living, go work at a brewery. Don't start a brewery unless you want to run a business.
