I enjoyed seeing the random comments on the many Orange County beer places, the well-known along with the obscure. I hope all you folks who visit or live in this mash-up of cities and suburbs will keep posting your thoughts. I'm always looking for opinions and recommendations in the region. And wishing everyone a Happy and Prosperous 2025!

So to start, here is Under Oath IPA from Judge Brewing that took over from Lost Winds in San Clemente:
Lemony aroma with some guava is quite inviting. This is quite sweet, more like a DIPA. The hop flavors are quite robust, weaving in and out of citrus, canned peaches, guava nectar, and even more fruit. Lemon peel in the nose and aftertaste. Overall this is a surprising sweet and tangy hoppy brew that is a different sort of sipper. From the 16 oz can purchased at the brewery tasting room.

I grabbed a 4 pack of the black IPA collaboration between Radiant and Riip Dank After Dark, it’s a beautiful mix of hops and malt. Probably the best black IPA I’ve ever had. I’m glad it’s been distributed to many of the local shops so I should be able to pick up plenty more of these. Hopefully it’s not a one off.

I read this description on Untapped and had to repost because of how accurate it is, “It’s like hitting a bowl and getting a wee bit of ash pulling through.”

My 4 pack didn’t last the weekend. I’ll be picking more up next week.

Buster Brown Ale from ROM, another San Clemente small brewery, formerly called DeLaHunt Brewing.

Quite richly flavored with dark roasted malt. Just a slight sweetness but enough to bring out the caramel taste. Tangy finish, with a fruity note and finally a hint of burnt sugar. Just a little hop flavor of something green, but there is a modest bitter aftertaste with a hint of butter. Overall this is a better than average Brown Ale with a quaffable ABV and endless flavor.

This weekend is Radiants 4th anniversary. That’s 4 years since the pandemic hit. Good for these guys. They have a special can release, All The Things We’ve Done-Year 4. A double coming in at 9%. Loaded up with 9 hops. Congrats to Radiant. :beers:

Purchased this can from O’Shea’s in Laguna Niguel. But it’s so dirty, I don’t think I can do it. What do you think?

Rinse it. Scrub it. Whatever makes you feel comfortable. Then drink it!

    Brave lad, Raul!
But I often rinse and squeejee a bit of paper towel on that ring around the collar.
Supposed to be German-style Pilsner with Saphir and Tettnang hops.
Aroma of grapes, straw, alfalfa, and a hint of sourdough in the nose. Bright and tangy with a lively mouthfeel and the taste of malt to start. Slightly sweet with a malty, bready taste. Modest touch of hops, with a bit of green herb and some lemon. Quite tasty, though maybe not the freshest flavor. Still, it's another reason to try whatever Radiant puts out.

Interesting, looks like they have a sister coffee shop and probably incorporate that into the stouts which could be cool. Lots of seltzers listed on the site tho...

yup. Only have stouts, ales & seltzers. No IPA or Hazy. Probably not a good thing

I'm actually totally ok with the no IPA's or hazies! I imagine that seltzers are probably easy to make and can be a good profit margin item for them if they feel like the clientele will like them (and maybe they see them as a good complement to food since it looks like they have a kitchen and food menu). But it seems like it's less of a total beer-centric place with the seltzers and soju cocktails... and there's nothing wrong with that. I wish them well, will try to visit if I'm in the area.

I’m sure they’ll get around to brewing an ipa or 2. Most Asians don’t care for hoppy bitter IPA’s. It’s not in there genes. Not far from Beachwood GG spot. I’ll try and swing by sooner than later, but the hours suck for now.

After many many years I finally found the time to revisit one of OC’s first breweries from back in the day when they started up at their Placentia location. They never were the same when they moved to the Fullerton location. This is my first time and will be my last time to the Costa Mesa location. I was hoping for one or two lagers/pilsners, but didn’t see anything interesting on the board. Far Out was far off from what I remembered. New Year same beer was better. My Dad’s Hawaiian Shirt was the best of the 3 IPA’s while Knuckle Sandwich was still too sweet for my taste buds. Remember the days we’d stand in line for 6 bombers of KS? Them days are long gone.
Long live craft & rock n roll!
    :beers:

Been here, done that. The schwarzbier was good. Better than the Fool Bloom west coast.

Well, call me a mutant freak of nature because I love me the hoppy beers. Monkish is also an Asian-owned brewery. Although, to be fair, they came to embrace IPAs years after opening. I still occasionally wonder what happened to the no IPA sign they had.

We also know why they “embraced” IPA’s. It’s not like they were lukewarm on the idea of brewing IPA’s, they were very openly against it. Until they realized that Belgian golden ales brewed with rose hips weren’t going to pay the bills.

Other Half & hazy’s saved Henry’s Monk. Or played a huge part.
