Where is the best by or brew date on the Allagash Black bottle? I see two sets of numbers, one on the bottom of the bottle and the other on the side.

Thanks, that's what I thought. Why the Julian date? It's good for astronomy, but why beer?

The date on the bottom of the bottle is 2093. Is this best by? It's 9%, though.

That is 9/24. I bought it the Thursday prior to the 24th.

Wouldn't is be 2=2012 and 93=April 3rd(93rd day of the year)? How are you determining 9/24?

You are absolutely correct. Allagash emailed me with the correct date-4/3. However, if one puts the Julian date for April 3, 2012, it's not 2093. Is this the Julian date, or a type of numeric system?

The Julian date for CE 2012 April 3 00:00:00.0 UT is
    JD 2456020.500000
    -US Navy

The true Julian date is a sequential number representing the time that has elapsed since 4713 BC, so it is not technically correct to call it the Julian date. This code, though, is using the Julian calender since they represent the day in the year based on its sequential date number starting from 1 and ending in 365(number of days in a Julian year).

This beer moving to 12oz bottles was one of the best things to happen in the beer world for me this year.

From Allagash: "This first number is the last number of the year. The last three are the day of the year."

A recent bomber had the bottling date on the side of the bottle.

I have a bottle that says "1421 037 130320" on the bottom and on the side of the label it says, "1003" and directly below that "09:30"...so what is the botted or brewed date?

Most beer companies use a form of Julian dating that isn't entirely correct, and not always consistent from brewer to brewer. BruReview nailed what Allagash does (and DFH, at the very least).

That said, I asked Allagash about batch #s and dates, and they e-mailed back that if you give them a specific brew/batch/#, they'll tell you the bottle date, so even if you can't decipher the code on the bottle, you shouldn't have to guess.

ChrisRay, that one should be March 20th, 2013, even though it doesn't look like Julian dating.

So the last group of #'s are the ones that matter? I can handle that. Thanks.

In your case, it seems, yes. The dates aren't always that long, but that one looks (to me) like (20)13 MAR 20. None of it looks like a Julian date.

I love Allagash, but it's pretty much bullshit when breweries use the Julian code type dating. I can't imagine they would do it for any reason other than to make it harder to figure how old the beer is.

I just picked up a case of Black for 12.99. They said it was out of date. No such thing for this brew, IMO.

The only thing out of date about it is the price!

Hell, at that price, if you get one for me, I'll come and get it next week when I have a car ;-) Gas would be cheap compared to the regular price on that beer!
