I've been dying to post this for about a week, but didn't want to in case people tried to take advantage...

A few weeks back I went to the Allagash brewery and bought several beers to share including a Dubbel. Everything else I got (Old HLT, FOUR, Curieux) was really great. The Dubbel, interestingly enough, tasted really off. Kind of metallic and strange. The people I shared it with agreed and I dumped the rest.

I emailed Allagash to tell them about the problem. I thought it a shame that one of their apparent flagship beers would taste off straight from the brewery. In no time they responded and asked for the info on the bottle (date/batch number). I gave them what they asked for, and they got right back to me explaining that they had run some tests and found the beer passed their standards, but was high on some one scale. In the future, they say, they have a way to remedy it.

I was pretty happy with that result, but they also asked for my address to send me something to thank me for taking the time to write.

A few days later this package came in. I'm totally blown away- I've loved Allagash for a while, but I think they've now got a fiercely loyal customer for life.

Good to see that there are still companies that take responsibility for the quality of their products, and actually care about the consumer experience. Well done.

I don't have any comments on their customer service, but I'm utterly befuddled as to why they don't expand production of the Coolship or wild ales. They seem to be a brewery that is willing to expand and they count white as their most successful brew, so they expanded just to make more of it. I like to give them (more than other breweries) the benefit of the doubt that they just don't realize how successful their wild ales could be.

I am sure they would but given the space required along with the time and resources to produce those beers I would think it is not possible. But I agree, the more sours the better.

OP, cheers on your great experience, some tasty brews!

    Damn. I wish Cisco/L.A. would take a similar approach…

Always good to hear these stories.

I had a bad bottle of Russian River, emailed them with my concern, and within a couple hours was taken care of. Because of that, I'm sure they'll be recouping their small expenditure tenfold from me in coming years. I've heard a lot of great things about them from others, as well. Hopefully idiots don't try and take advantage of the companies who truly care about their customers and diminish the customer service experience for everyone else.

I feel this is more the norm and not the exception for craft breweries in general.
