Alpine announced the return of Nelson this morning. Any of you know if this is the OG recipe, or the Green Flash shit swill? I read that Mcilhenney's son is the brewer now so I would assume he has access to the OG recipe.

You should keep in mind that it's not just the recipe but the actual brewhouse and other parts of the brewhouse as well, and the ingredients that you're using. How big was the original Alpine system? What are they brewing on now? Those original Alpine beers may never be produced again. Sad shame.

Not surprising with all the Nelson hops available around the country. I'll wait until someone whos palate knows better confirms it.

Hasn't Shawn been the brewer up on the hill for years now?

Let me know when Pat gets the band back together...

OTB may know if it’s the OG or not. But I think the Nelson hops are not the same hops used in the original recipe. @OTB

    Hi David,

This upcoming batch was brewed at Green Flush Brewing. To respond to a few posts in this thread, Shawn is a GF employee, he's not autonomous with the OG Alpine brewery on the hill, he goes where they tell him to go. GF acquired the OG Nelson recipe in the acquisition, however we all know how that recipe transitioned from Alpine to Mira Mesa. As most of you probably know by now, there has been an amazing large crop of super high quality Nelson Sauvin hops that has finally made its way to the US after years of scarcity and very low quality, look at what Henry did with it with his otherworldly 100% Nelson hopped Pre-historic B-Boy as well as Modern Times amazing Space Ways. Because of the shear quality of this current crop of Nelson there may be a chance that this upcoming release of " Nelson " could be better than the all the previously embarrassing attempts to replicate a classic. There is only one OG Nelson, and until Pat and Shawn get the band back together you can take your chances on the GF version or go take advantage of this amazing crop and buy a Nelson hopped beer from a brewery like MT, or Monkish.

    Cheers,

Unfortunately, every account says it's a mere shadow of its former self.

Also don't forget what Cellarmaker recently did with the hop in Double Mt. Nelson, Tiny Dankster, Wild Gooseberry Chase and Abel Tasman.

"Nelson is often imitated, but there’s nothing like the original. It’s Nelson or nothing,” said Shawn McIlhenney, Head Brewer at Alpine Beer Company. “Until now, we’ve only offered very limited releases of Nelson in our tasting room and around town, so I’m really excited that now even more people can enjoy one of my favorite IPAs.”

Described as “legendary” by its fans across the country, Nelson was originally released only on draft and limited 22 oz. bottles at Alpine Beer Company’s tasting room. Nelson (7.0 % AVB) is named after Nelson Sauvin, an outstanding hop varietal from New Zealand. Hops are introduced throughout the brewing and dry-hopping of this complex and well-balanced IPA. A hazy straw hued ale, Nelson is topped by bright white beer foam and offers a tropical hop aroma. The pine and fruity hop notes linger, but are well-balanced by the smooth, malty addition of European rye malts. Nelson’s fans describe the beer as a stunning and multifaceted yet mellow IPA.
The release of six-pack bottles, of one of the craft beer industry’s most highly sought-after IPAs will make Nelson more accessible; However due to the limited supply of New Zealand hops harvested each year, Nelson will not be available year-round."

Definitely was made at GF. Saw all the GF beers in the background when they showed the bottles on the IG story

Ha Ha Ha, yea right ........and those “limited releases “ were all GF plunk, nothing remotely close to the OG, come on Shawn you know better I would think to make a statement like that.

    Cheers

Maybe it's just because it's been so long, but I thought this was one of the best post-GF batches. Worth picking up.
