I guess (actually, I know) I am in the minority of not caring for HB, I much prefer ZD, and I will also throw DayTime pale ale and others. I think this is because there is something about the house yeast at Alpine I don't care for, I pick it up in their pale ales and some of the single IPAs.

side note: what is the deciding factor between the blurred line of hoppy pale ales and session IPAs. I use to think ABV, but DayTime is considered an IPA but has a lower ABV than HB and ZD.

I have no clue. When I first tried ZD with my brother in law, we both said it was a great IPA. Did not realize at the time it was classified as a APA.

I drank the shit out of ZD when I lived in Ohio.

    Fresh HB > Fresh ZD

    Ooh ooh, I wanna play...
Double Nelson > Bad Boy > Nelson > Expo (I didn't used to care for it, but I've grown to appreciate it's complexity) > Pure > Melonhead (very unique flavor) > Duet > Birthday (not a big fan of thinish "session" beers. I prefer big beers.)
Haven't tried Super IPA yet, but they're expecting a keg at my Whole Foods tomorrow...

Just finished my third and final growler of Hoppy BDay the other day. Have one growler of the big stuff left, Bad Boy. Have to kill it this weekend as I'll b taking a trip to Budapest later next week.

Pour it into 20 or so 3oz containers and bring it on the flight with you!

Daytime is not an IPA. There is no such thing as a Session IPA. They're APA's with two buzz words ("session" and "IPA") that get people to buy Pale Ales that they'd normally pass over.

What's everyone think of the most recent bottling of expo?

Just popped a bottle and while it's good, it's drinking a bit boozy. Not a shocker for an 11% beer - just more of an edge than the couple times I've had it on tap:

OK, I'm one of the "many" who will disagree...
Firstly, I'll agree that Birthday may be the best APA (though I've never had Zombie Dust).
However, I'd probably PREFER the 75th best DIPA to the best APA. I just think these "hoppy APAs/session beers" feel too thin. Give me a BIG beer anytime.
Furthermore, as someone who wasn't crazy about the first Expo he had (undeniable malty sweetness), each successive tasting (OK, 2 lol) has grown on me- I have been able to appreciate the very impressive "exponential" usage of hops, and resultant complexity of flavor in Expo. I'll take Expo over Birthday any day.

To me, these (necessarily) boozy TIPAs always drink smoother on tap than from the bottle. BUT, having only had Expo twice (the most recent 2 brewings), I actually prefer the current bottles to the previous ones. But this may speak more to my personal evolution as an IPA connoisseur.

This phase will pass (liking mediocre beers just because they're big).

    Cheers

I just had a EH last night (bottle) and thought the same thing - good, but a little too boozy. Still had no problem downing the bottle though.

    via the newsletter:

This is potentially some of the biggest news to ever come out of Alpine Beer Company. With the signing of a couple of hop contracts we have positioned ourselves to produce an additional 2,000 barrels of Duet and an additional 2,000 barrels of Nelson starting in late 2013. A “barrel” is two kegs. We plan on new packaging with a 16 oz. bigmouth twist off can along with 22 oz. bottles and kegs. There is little more I can currently say about how we are going to pull this off but know there is a lot of work to be done to assure the quality and standards are met while stepping up production. And, with Water being the largest ingredient in beer, it becomes the primary flavor contributor and is a highly important part of beer itself. Let’s just say we found a killer water source and a place to make more beer, yahoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

Looks like the "looking for" investors paid off. So will we see bottles distributed in the OC/LA area? I'll still drive the 2 hours for ABC's beers. Great news!
