The problem with Port OB isn't the crowds, it is that the taplist has been so damn inconsistent the last few months!

We must've crossed paths. I was there with a group of guys from 8ish until about 11pm. Was a great place for a group of out-of-town guys vacationing in OB to hit up on a Friday night for beer, wings, pizza, and Buck Hunter! Definitely crowded, but not overwhelmingly or annoyingly so. Our party of 12 managed to find seating together within 15 minutes or so.

Pizza Ports can be a zoo because they're super popular as eating establishments, especially for families. I don't get to O'brien's much as I'm in Carlsbad, but I've been able to get some Alpine, alternate Russian Rivers and other beers. Bummer if it's lagging.

I'll have to revisit MT's selection. Always looking for lower ABV. They seemed to be on the hype train a bit, I'm sure due to the pre-opening promotional stuff.

Anyone think Port OB quality is suffering due to Yiga splitting?

The new brewer they have brought in has been doing a great job. As Tyrsis said, Norsewoman is great, as is Kung Fu Elvis and the rebrew of Burning of Rome.

Evilc, I am dissappointed in you. As such an IPA/hop fan and someone who always bashes others for not just taking the trek to Alpine you have no excuse for not going to PPOB. If you go to MT for lunch, PPOB is only another 5-10 minutes away

This is good advice. I end up in SD once or twice a year & don't always have time to run everywhere - but I always hit Toronado.

Besides having some pretty good beers Benchmark will also fill other breweries growlers. They'll even give you a piece of tape to cover the logo!

AHA! Someone who has gotten plenty of Pliny and says it gets old. But before you whip off a response, please believe that this is not a criticism by any means but it sure as hell points out that rareties do command more attention than they're worth and once you can get as much of something as you want whenever you want, the appeal/popularity/I need to have this today feeling lessens considerably.

BTW, I'll be visiting the area in a couple of weeks and I'm looking forward to my fill of Plliny.

They've had plenty of other (D)IPAs from some of the smaller San Diego breweries, and they do change that lineup often. The Sculpin/Pliny combo is their bread and butter for out of town visitors.

I'm sure we'll see Expo there in a week or two.

As Jacob said, "we are aiming to be one of the top 500 new breweries located behind an adult entertainment center".

Absolutely agreed. Have not had a beer from them that I enjoy, let alone would put on the same pedestal as most other San Diego breweries. I had pretty high expectations for them going in, with the owner being one of the most successful competition homebrewers and all, but their beers have just fallen short for me.
