So I just had the Alt Route from SN's Beer Camp Across America 12-pack, and I'm really loving this style. I haven't yet scoured the bottle shop shelves for it, but I'm not aware of much/any of this style being widely available. I'll have to check into it further, but I was wondering if anyone knows of an Altbier that I could easily find in Ohio and does the style justice.
I would try asking in the New to Ohio thread...that's where pretty much all Ohio discussion takes place so a lot of people view that thread.
I love altbiers, but very hard to find around Columbus except on tap at a few small breweries. Alaskan brewing is expanding to Michigan, so if you are in N Ohio, you should be able to get their Amber altbier bottles. It's very good. Their smoked porter is fantastic as well.
Uerige Sticke & Uerige Doppel Sticke. This would be the best available ones. Might have to really search or ask your "go to" store to order it. If they don't know who distributes them, tell them Cavalier does (or they used to).
Those 2 brews were what I thought of when seeing the thread title. I can't say I've paid too close attention lately, but I remember the East side Anderson's having one or both brews in the past. I'd guess they would still have them now, too.
Come to the Grandview Craft Beer Alliance's Summer Session on August 23rd. Zaftig (Worthington, OH) will be tapping their new Altbier! grandviewcraftbeer.com/summersession
Uerige is available everywhere but if you don't try it immediately after its shipped here don't bother. In the end the best place to get an altbier is Germany. In the US it just takes the connotation of an American amber ale with noble hops and german ale yeast. There is a brewery called Olde Mecklenburger that does a good one, again not hoppy enough for an altbier but w/e. And while not super true to style the Metropolitan one isn't bad. And if you want a crappier German one Kutscher can be found on draft, but not bottles.
