I know there are people that are 10000% more crafty than me but has anybody made some cool stuff using aluminum cans? Some of the can graphics out there are amazing I'd love a way to display them without having just a can collection
There was a thread recently that touched on this a bit where someone posted a picture of a bunch of flattened cans screwed (?) to a wall that looked kinda cool, but a bit like a recycle center's floor. It made me think if you were to cut off the tops and bottoms of cans, cut them up the side (probably near the bar code, or even cut off the 'small print' section out from top to bottom, if it doesn't affect the can art), roll them out flat and fix them to a board or wall it might make for a nice display.
Since aluminum cans are punched out of thicker aluminum discs called slugs (rather than "rolled" out of flat stock the way the old steel beer cans were) it is difficult to cut them up and have them lay flat, since the curve is essentially manufactured into the metal.
Sure they would still have some ripples, but they would still look better than crushed cans, in my opinion. What is your suggestion for CraigP83, then? Or is this just another nit-pick post?
Just noting that he should probably try a few and see how difficult it is before saving up a bunch to "flatten". I thought that smashed can wall made a statement - granted, one which had little to do with breweriana/preservation of brewing industry history. And one that I wouldn't want to lean against while drinking a beer. Mostly nit-picking (see above) but I took his comment re: "craft/cool stuff" as looking for a project like: Or, worse, the dreaded 1970s Beer Cap (of a different meaning):
These were huge in the 1970s (and where I grew up they were always Hamm's and Schmidt): Note: I prefer vintage snap-back/mesh caps, personally. But if I ever wrangle a crafty etsy-ish thirty-ish-something gal pal I'm totes gonna show her my tote of 'nickel' cans.
Now, see - when I did a quick Google Image-ing, I couldn't turn up something local to me like Schaefer (although, I think this earlier can design would make superior headwear): "Thirty-ish", Chaz? You might have go a bit up the age chart to find a crocheter - maybe someone has a crochet app on their smart phone? (And I bet those were mostly made from polyester yarn - watch out for sparks!). Or you could just wait a while and some young thing might be able to make one for you with a 3-D printer. (Start saving those rare (soon to be obsolete?) US Carling Black Label cans now!)
Steel cans? Very, very metal. Hah! I've got enough of those for at least a couple of hats. For the sake of novelty, I'd like to see someone make a U.S. map with cans filled by contemporary U.S. brewers. That's gotta be a pretty unique challenge in and of itself!
I frequently see aluminum can airplanes like these at craft shows. https://www.bing.com/images/search?...rplanes&qpvt=aluminum+can+airplanes&FORM=IGRE
