Good to know! Likely it's in brown bottles in my area, too. I haven't looked for it in bottles in so long I hadn't noticed  Cheers!

Good beer is good beer. You hand me a fresh well-brewed Pilsner and I will most definitely drink it!! Cheers from Arkansas.

Mine too. It's too bad that some American brewers feel the need to smash boulders on it using a forklift.

Never say never... let's start a separate thread with a petition to Guinness. And why not throw the Extra in for fun?

Back to your regularly scheduled Pils-Talk... :grinning:

Makes you wonder who was in charge when the Jever was added to the mix of "bad beer."

Well if you like skunked Pils, you don't have to buy the expensive stuff that someone else has left exposed to light. You can get that from any Pils just by letting your glass sit in the direct sunlight for about 10 min.

(Personally I avoid light struck beer like the plague. I really have some powerful bad memories from having to wash a dog that once got tangled up with a skunk... Boy did that pooch smell :-)).

Unless the beer is made with hop extract...

Well I clicked on this link to say, "yea dude you are alone" but apparently I am way wrong! Now that I think about it, I'm not sure I've had many "craft" pilsners. When I think pilsner, I also think of Miller Lite so it must be a mental block. I will say that I'm not even much of a fan of most session IPA's (not enough flavor for me) so I strongly doubt I'd be too into the Pils, but I'll have to give it a shot!

Here's a comparison you might keep in mind that I used earlier in the thread.

"Miller Lite bears the same relationship to an authentic Pils beer that Kraft Easy Cheese bears to a block of Cheddar cheese or that Movie Theater Popcorn 'butter' bears to farm fresh butter."

I was just there three weeks ago. It is a bit fresher in some pubs. But our beer in the U.S. is brewed in Dublin...same stuff. That wasn't what I meant, I meant, even among competition in Ireland, it's certainly not the best of its style.

I'm sure they put just as much planning and market research into that as they did into their overall decision to move to Berlin -- to quote Greg Koch: "Zero." Just go to a grocery store and pick up beer from the shelves...it's GOT to all be bad, right?

Of course, it's German and they don't know anything about beer anymore.

I love pilsners! One that seems to never get mentioned is Polestar from Left Hand. It is a great example. Although i must admit it is tough to find in my area. Konig is great as well.

Zero planning? Source of quote. Thanks.

Have been drinking a lot of hoppy stuff lately. Decided to take a little break and try some pilsners and lagers.
Really enjoyed Lagunitas Pils, Mama Yella Pils and Metropolitan Flywheel.
It's great to drink new styles or styles that have been slept on for a bit.
    Cheers!

I feel that Pilsners are extremely overlooked. I respect a brewery much more when they can crank out a killer pils. The style is true to beer. If they have any sort of flaw, it'll show. No barrel aging or super hopping can cover it up. You are not alone!

That was why I specifically asked about the "Zero" planning part of your statement.

As for saying "Zero Marketing Research" that can be both literally true and totally misleading on Stone's part (possibly unintentionally). But any clever administrator can easily learn that one should always tell the truth but that there's no obligation to tell all of it and if others want to draw erroneous conclusions....

So if one means, "hire a company to do consumer polls and focus groups" then one can say zero marketing research quite honestly if you haven't done it. That, however, does not mean that there was no personal exporation of the situation and information gathered about what consumers prefer, etc. by being on site in multiple sites as part of the planning. For example, a semi-knowledgeable observer coming into a particular place on a second visit 5 years after the first can in fact spot things that have or are changing when even the locals aren't paying much attention to those changes. Similarly, establishing collaborative brewing relationships with people who have "been there" can help someone learn a lot. None of this would fall under the heading of "marketing research" if it is being considered and done as part of the planning process.

Or consider the Richmond site selection process, from what I've seen and heard about it (admittedly from the outside), "We've done zero marketing research" can be literally true because others have already done it and are using it as part of their sales pitch to get you to locate there.

Well, I took their comment to be -- like most of their other public/marketing statements -- a bit more than tongue-in-cheek. No one would be hubristic enough to go into such a venture with literally "no market research," right? That said, I'm not sure I get the "joke." However, I would still maintain that not much thought at all went into the boulder smashing stunt. Jever wasn't the only very good beer among the victims. But that's Stone's MO, and it certainly seems to have worked here in the U.S., so....

You are not alone. If there is a heaven, and I hope there is, I hope they have a good selection of German Pilsners on tap! My current favorite beer is Weihenstephaner Premium.
