So I have been talking to some friends about this the last week or so. I'm thinking about trying to do a CO only beer for a year new years resolution. The way I see it....not a lot of styles, if any except very obscure stuff, that I can't get from one of our great local breweries. Of course it'll mean I'm out on a few festivals (I'm discounting Vail since I already have a ticket and that was before my bright idea) and possibly some killer fresh releases. But I think it will be a rewarding challenge.

What do you guys think? Possible for a super beer knerd to go a year on CO brew alone? Anyone else up for the challenge? Can anyone think of something I'll really miss out on from other states/countries that I couldn't replace with something local?

Stock up on Ten FIDY and other non yearly beers, you'll be thankful when they're not on the shelves. And I hope you like IPAs. It could be tough, but doable.

You better pack up your cellared beers and I'll pick them up. I wouldn't want you to be tempted to break your resolution. You're welcome.

This is a great idea. (I'm not going to join you because I love my Belgians too much...but a great idea, nonetheless).

It might require a little planning to keep you satisfied year round, but off the top of my head, I cannot think of any style of beer that Colorado lacks completely. Gueuze, maybe?

    Yes, you're insane.

But, that's a cool idea. You can do it, easily I suspect (Vail and other fests might be acceptable mulligans). I think the effort will be well worth it, whether you're strict with it or not-so-strict. Could be fun, and since Bud Light Lime and blue mountains are here in CO, you can't lose!
I'm going to mull this over, and I might just join you. Would beers already in my 'cellar' count?

maybe very obscure with your title, but not crazy. Let me offer....
IPA - O'dell's IPA (by far my favorite off the shelf IPA)
    IIPA - Myrcenary
2 of my favorite beers of all time, add Oskar Blues and wouldnt be an issue at all.

I think the hardest part for me were I to do this would be hitting up bars, I think I would have to replace that with going to taprooms as often as possible. Or perhaps, just hit up Star Bar more frequently.

Also, I don't know if I could not buy Deschutes's Red Chair when it hit the shelves. I am sure you have your own favorite(s) that would be hard to give up on for an entire year.

I think it would be pretty cool experience overall though. I tend to focus as much Colorado beers myself but don't come close to be exclusive. As a result, lots of stuff I miss out on.

Technically speaking, if you've never tried this before, then it would be the exact opposite of insanity.

    Go for it.

I pretty much do this anyway. As a home brewer I'd rather spend less on beer and more on ingredients. This means I can't buy as much beer, and CO breweries get basically all of my beer money. The last non-CO beer I bought was when I went to Portland.

In my opinion this will be an extremely easy resolution. All the best beer in the world is made here anyway.

When I came back into the fold (gave up drinking for seven years) this is exactly what I did. You'll suprise yourself how many brews there are to choose from here in CO. I ticked away for almost a year solid and never ran out of options. And like Prospero says, there are so many breweries and taprooms you can hit up that it shouldn't be an issue.

Either you missed the "in my opinion" part, or opinions are against the rules as well.

Beer is no place for opinions. Only factual, scientific evidence as to which beers are my favorite are accepted.

I could do it pretty easily. There aren't many things we don't have. Unless you have a hankering for a very, very specific kind of beer you'll be fine. The only key is that you're likely going to have to travel a bit. A good chunk of our beer-scene around here is brewery-only.
