Founders Red's Rye is single hopped with Amarillo, and Founders All Day IPA is Amarillo and Simcoe, but the Amarillo shines through. Im sure many people will say Gumballhead, but to me its a poor representation of the Amarillo hop. But to each his own I guess.

I'll have to grab some All Day IPA next time I go home to Michigan. I'm interested in the Gumballhead since I've started drinking a local beer compared to it often, Fortunate Islands by Modern Times.

Yes, Ballistic seemed very malty this year. I suppose my palate could be used to much hoppier IPAs now.

Where in CA do you live? I've heard Founders will be coming out west sometime this year, so it may be easier to obtain than having to wait til you go to MI.

I just saw a post that was talking about Flying Dog is releasing a Single Hop Amarillo Double IPA. I'm hoping this beer is good, I love Amarillo and Flying Dog's price point are always pretty good.

What's interesting to me is that while I like Red's Rye I don't care for the hop character in All Day or Gumballhead. Both of those have an earthy character that I don't like that reminds me of the taste of well water. I guess that means the jury is still out on whether I like Amarillo or not...

Not sure if you tried NB Accumulation. There is a nice Amarillo presence.

If you know anyone from TX, Real Ale should be releasing 4 Squared again soon. I guess it's not really an IPA, but it is dry hopped with Amarillo, and it is delicious!

How do all of you know what hops are used in a certain beer? Do they breweries disclose this info or is it posted somewhere else, or do you all just know hop character from experience? I have trouble finding info on what hops are used in beers I like.

It can be obvious sometimes in the aroma, but if its not listed on the label or on their website, you can usually shoot an email to the brewer. Lots of people make clone recipes of beers as well and they are easy to google.

It's either available on the brewery's website, confirmed in homebrew clones, or some people are just so well versed in hop varieties they know/think they know what hops are in what beer. When in doubt, I always email a brewery and ask the question on my mind. 90% of the time, they will be happy to help with any questions/concerns you have...

Clones really vary in quality and similarity to the original recipe. There are so many factors you can't always copy easily(water profile, hop utilization, malt and hop variations), it's not easy to do. If you want really good clone recipes, check out the Can You Brew It podcasts from the Brewing Network. They really go into the nitty gritty of it.

There hasn't been a press release, my friend works for them and mentioned they were looking to expand out west. I don't know which states or when, but with the huge capacity expansion they did last year, they can handle some western states now.

Another BIG thumbs up for Founders Red's Rye IPA.

Founders took some heat on these boards for the 4 pack format/pricing but it has a unique and crisp flavor that is tough to match and an annual treat.
