I just picked up some Pilsner Urquell at a local store. It is a bit disappointing but that may be a freshness issue even though the freshness date is still far in the future. It was nice to see it in a brown bottle. I'm hoping it will be better in Prague.

SA Noble Pils has been discontinued but the Downtime Pilsner in their current summer variety pack is a worthy replacement.

I'm a Lager-head as well and some great suggestions in this thread!

Imported Pilsner Urquell has a nine month best by timeframe. What was the date on your bottles?

    Cheers!

Jack, the date was mid December so it is slightly over 3 months old. I suspect, but don't know, that it may not have been properly controlled for temperature. I'm still going to try it in Prague!

It is still listed on their website as available in January.

As part of the Pilsner Urquell Freshness Initiative they are using refrigerated containers to ship the beer to the US.

If you get to the Czech Republic I would encourage you to try the unfiltered Pilsner Urquell available on draft at tanková (tank) pubs. The ultimate would be drinking the unfiltered and unpasteurized Pilsner Urquell available at the brewery in Plzen and at the Na Parkanu pub in Plzen.

    Cheers!

Thanks. I'll do that. I did know it was supposed to ship refrigerated but I think the local store, which is undergoing some remodeling, may not have been as careful with it.

Yup, the local beer retailer can be a 'weak link' in the distribution chain. If your beer is only 3 months old, a few weeks at room temperature at your local beer store should not really be an issue here.

    Cheers!

This is something I think is commendable. It's also something I am willing to pay a bit extra for and yet all the pils urquell is still so reasonably priced.

    Maria,

I suspect that the reasonable pricing is a combination of the strength of the dollar against the Czech crown (koruna) plus Pilsner Urquell is owned by SABMiller so there are some economies of scale there.

    Cheers!

Pilsner Urquell is my favorite pilsner and my favorite overall beer. The following list has some pretty good American made pilsners that come close to the real Czech thing: Sierra Nevada Nooner and Summerfest Lager, Oskar Blues Mama's Lil Yella, Green Flash East Village Pilsner, Griffin Claw Bohemian Pilsner, Victory Prima Pils

Not sure if this gets distro outside CA but: North Coast Scrimshaw is a winner every time.

this might be of limited use to you, augustusrex, but if you ever travel to northern california, you should seek out anything by moonlight brewing. it's not a classic german schwarzbier, but death and taxes is a phenomenal black lager.

Southern Star Bombshell Blonde is alright, Sprecher Mai Bock is Amazing, and Six Point Crisp is pretty damn good (but it does have a bit of hoppiness to it)
