I have been drinking craft beer since before it was legal for me to drink. This amazing site helped me discover Sierra Nevada pale ale and the rest is history. I was wondering if there are any beers that I'm really missing out on? I usually don't spend more than $10 a 4pk since I'm on a college budget. I like pale ales, ipa's, porters, stouts, wee heavy's, Czech pilsner's, but am open to any beer style really. Some of my favorite brewers are Sierra Nevada, Bell's, Founders, and Stone. Are there any offerings from breweries that distribute to Iowa that I should check out?
I don't know that there is a whole lot of brews that are good budget beers. Almost all of Laginitas is probably within your budget. Their bombers are usually under $6, however I am unaware what Iowa gets for distribution.
You need to go to Cyclone Liquors out east on Lincoln Way. Best beer selection in Ames, that I'm aware of.
And at HyVee, right across the parking lot, you can make your own sixer. $1.50 - $2.00 a bottle, I think. Not the greatest selection though. Grab a few you've never had and experiment.
Another vote for Cyclone, a big selection. I haven't been into the Hy-vee across the way for well over a year, but I'd imagine Cy still has it beat.
Go down to the Ames British Store right now, they are getting out of beer and have everything marked down to cost (or did, it might be all gone)
Thanks for all the advice. I'll have to check out cyclone liquors. I've heard Peace Tree has some good stuff. Are there other good local options?
Millstream has some good beers. So do Exile, Confluence, Toppling Goliath and 515 brewing. But I don't know if any of them would be available in Ames. Might have to come down to Des Moines.
