I thought I'd start this thread here. There are two new breweries in Amesbury: Silvaticus and Bare Wolf (it may be one word). My brother lives in town, so we met up for "exactly two beers" at each place a couple weeks ago.

Silvaticus looks to be aiming more along the lines of farmhouse-y, pilsners, etc. German & Belgian, I guess. I had one of their farmhouses: Nice, light beer. Finishes dry; And I believe I had what was labeled as a hoppy lager. Didn't really stand out, but wasn't offensive either. Pretzel was good. Service was generous, gregarious, and helpful. Outside space was nice, but it was colder out, so it'd be even nice in the warm weather when you can overlook the river. To-go there were growlers.

Bare Wolf was pretty traditional in the way they they went from light to dark offerings, kind of running the whole gamut. I had the robust porter, which I thought lived up to it's name: medium bodied, great mouthfeel tasty porter. Bold enough to make an impact, but not super heavy. I also had their pale ale which was nice. The best way I can describe it is that it reminded me of (when Dave was there) Blue Lobster's Gold Claw -- y'all young'n's might not remember that. Great flavor for 5% or so. And there was bean bags, but I lost on the last throw and it sucked. Not too sure if there are to-go options.

I would go back to both for sure, but initial nod goes to BW mainly because I thought the porter was the beer of the night. It's nice to have both of these places 15 mins away.

Visited Silvaticus today. Cool spot in a renovated mill building with a nice little patio.

Their “simple” lager, the Sovereign, blew me away. Crisp, bready, hops really popped & the back end too - really a fantastic beer that I’d put up against anything @ Jack’s Abby (hot-take alert). Had a taste of the smoked lager & spruce tip Helles which were good too, tho I’m more a fan of straight-up lagers.

Also tried one of their farmhouse ales which was very pleasant & clean.

Employees were very nice & chatty, definitely a sign of the pride in what this place is doing.

Strong rec to visit, especially if you’re a lager lover.

Loved Baron von Smoke, Silvaticus' smoked märzen, when I visited. I hope they produce more smoked lagers. Also, I need to go back and get some merch cuz their logo is bad ass.

I love a great lager and a good use of spruce tips. Might have to check this out.

I thought Silvaticus is putting out great beers and when I heard an employee talking about how much they look up to Notch it all made sense. Silvaticus has one of the best looking taplists for a new brewery in 2017. It's not the 5 hoppy beers and a stout on like all the other new breweries.

Swung by Silvaticus today. Lovely spot. The Sovereign Pilsner was delicious. They had a Vienna Lager which was lovely, as was the nitro black lager. For a small town brewery it struck me as about as perfect as they come. Best toilet in a brewery I've ever seen. Open window with the river rolling over the rocks outside.

I’ve visited many times & the Sovereign Lager is always a winner, as is the rotating hoppy lager with whatever hops they can get. Lots of skill exhibited by the brewer.

Really good spot worth a visit. Yeah the bathrooms are good!

Silvaticus is one of my favorite breweries in MA, their lager game is really strong. Also, it's refreshing to go to a brewery that only does full pours. Off-putting for tickers but I agree with their philosophy that you can't really get a good appreciation for a beer with a sample flight.

Also have a love for Bare Wolf, if only because their brewery is tacky townie chic (in a good way).

Yeah wifefrom had the hoppy lager. Was very nice that it was a lager first and foremost with a nice hop aroma and not too overpowering in the taste. There seemed to be a lot of folks drinking the radler too. And yes, big lovely half liter glasses were very appreciated.

I’m going to give a 99% here because I remember a good boy sitting near us on the deck when it first opened, though for some reason I recall it possibly belonging to an owner or friend of ...

Based on my general drinking preference, it would seem silvaticus would be my go to but I prefer BareWolfs beer. Scotch ale was excellent, pale ales have been good (not so much an IPA guy), and the porter is their best in the lineup I think.

Sat inside but fairly sure there was a dog outside on the patio next to the river.

Pretty sure on patio only. I’ve seen dogs waiting with owners at beer counter then head outside.

603 (NH) & Riverwalk (MA) are 2 that definitely allow free reign with dogs.

Not a brewery but Trina’s Starlite (Inman Sq) has opened an outpost in Amesbury. A bit of that Camberville attitude seeps through but saved by some cool barkeeps.

Good beer list & nice scratch cooking of simple food from the kitchen.

Little bumpski. I went to Silavaticus today. Love love love love.

-Well rounded tap list with not an IPA in sight. Pils, Vienna, dark lager(nitro), tripel, hoppy lager, and a kettle sour.

-Soveriegn lager is amazing. I would also, like @SunDevilBeer , put it up against any traditional lager JA has ever brewed.

-The Vienna was also impressive but missing a bit of malt character that put it over the top .

    - For the record the outside area is dog friendly. There is a big bowl of water and a bit of nature with the river to keep the pups entertained for a while.

-They sell and serve in the full full Willi Bechers. Full on pours with plenty of head room. For reference: I'm biased because these are my favorite glass style but I had to buy one.

-They have some picky food (pretzel, cheese plate, pickled veggies) I didn't have any but they looked great and were being talked up by the people I spoke to.

Just a chill spot with beers that exceeded expectations.

    Also swung by Barewolf.

Nice spot with video games if that's your thing. Dogs are also not only allowed but welcomed with open arms. Staff was all about the dogs and complimentary treats if you want. Also free pretzels for the humans.

The porter was great. The hefe was good. I maintain my opinion of WILFF.

If I had to choose, I'm Silavaticus all day and all night but luckily I don't and I think Amesbury has a great thing going on.
