I was given two bottles of Hopslam last year. My girlfriend really liked them and has been searching for something similar. I haven't gotten into IPA's so I am no help. I must admit I really liked it as well. Can anyone suggest something similar that is somewhat easy to find? We have both had Heady a few times (easy to find living in Vermont) but did not like it.

Not really too similar at all, but since you're in FL, has she tried Jai Alai before?

It's the honey that defines Hopslam, find a Double IPA with honey and it should please your gf.

No we haven't given it a try. I know Heady and Hopslam are different, I was trying to give a contrast (probably wasn't the best one) She has tried Hopnosh, Founders All Day, Two Hearted Ale, and a few others.

I was wondering if it had something to do with the Honey. I figured it had to be something more complex like something to do with the hops :flushed:

Evil Twin Molotov Cocktail is the closest IMO, and better IMO. It's 13% too

Thanks! I like that too. I will search that out. ET has just started showing up in my area so hopefully I can search this out.

Founder's Double Trouble might work. And I agree with @TonyJ815 too, try Jai Alai for a local option.

FYI, when honey is used in brewing it typically ends up just getting fermented to alcohol. Many people, myself included, do not have sensitive enough tastes to detect whatever small honey residuals are left after fermentation, but you or your GF might be one of the few more sensitive to the honey flavors. Using honey [or other simple sugars] during brewing will give a beer a big ABV bump though, which is part of the reason why Hopslam clocks in around 10% ABV.

Yes thanks! I saw that and it got me thinking that without a doubt that I will NOT be able to get any where I live. I started wondering if there is anything similar.

Haha I am not sure that I am one of those people but maybe...I saw Double Trouble the other day at a local store. I may take a trip back there tonight!

I know this won't help but pipeworks square grouper had a similar taste to Hopslam. It's prolly even harder to get ahold of

Not exactly the same, but if you don't like iipa and you did like hopslam, I'd at least try a 120 minute. Unfortunately, they are tough to come by. DFH has a pretty wide distribution at least.

I've only had hopslam once and wasn't too impressed but I'm wondering if Dogfish Head 75 minute would be an option?

You live in Vermont but your avatar says Florida? Like most others have said its the honey. My wife could not stand beer but would always try and her breakthrough was also hopslam! Her new favorite btw as is mine is pseudo sue. If you can't find something let me know as I have a case of hopslam reserved and would be willing to part with half for some heady:slight_smile:

Hopslam is technically a Double IPA, so that means more malts and sugar content to boost up the abv. I would suggest looking at DIPA's with an abv of over 8%. If she likes the sweeter ones like Hopslam look to the midwest breweries like Great Lakes they are extremely malt forward and too sweet for my taste. Someone said Double Trouble. But it would be old by now, they released it back in June. However, a lot of the hoppiness would have faded by now and it would be more malt driven making it a lot more like Hopslam. If you live in New England look at Jacks Abby, they make some great IPL's not too sweet but not as aggressive on the palate as an IPA.
