Well, its not an IPA, but rather a tripel: Bees in the Trappe from Grimm Artisanal Ales. My immediate thought when drinking it was that it reminded me of Hopslam - a strong pale ale, hoppy in an American-style way, and strongly featuring honey. Their Bees With a Buzz tripel is similar, but aged in brandy barrels.

I also had Arcadia's Hopmouth DIPA, and as far as I recall, it had a similar hop profile to Hopslam, with a honeyed edge to its sweetness, though I don't know if it was actually brewed with honey...

And I've had Molotov Cocktail, which is brewed with mango (?), and while it is a sweet, strong DIPA kinda ale, it didn't particularly remind me of Hopslam as much as Bees in the Trappe; but if its D/IPAs that are both malty sweet and powerfully bitter that you're looking for, then it would be a hit, as would a number of DIPAs out there. But I'm not so sure about the suggested Double Trouble, which as a DIPA leans more toward the leaner, tighter end of the DIPA spectrum (to my tastes), as opposed to that sweet, hoppy, honey pine character that Hopslam has.

    Cheers

I think this is right on the money, honey, and I'd add that there is no real comparison out there. One might be better homebrewing a clone recipe batch for something close.

Greenbush (another michigan brewery) makes Brother Benjamin, a double ipa brewed with honey. not quite a hopslam but it also seems to be a little easier to find.

This is what I was going to say. It has a slightly different malt character, but it is very good and is comparable.

Only problem with Brother Benjamin is, at least on the east side of Michigan, you can never find it fresh. Excellent beer though!

Pipeworks brews with honey often, but it will be tough to get. Square grouper and sure bet are both great DIPA brews with honey. Hopslam will be released next week. Not sure if bells has distro to FL, but if not it should be fairly easy to trade for.

Great Lakes Chillwave is one that when I first had reminded me of Hopslam. Not available until February but one to look forward to if you're able to get it.

Just in terms of strong, hoppy beers with a sweet kick, keep an eye out for Sierra Nevada Hoptimum and Sixpoint Hi-Res when they come out. They have that piney/resiny edge to them, too.

I also really enjoy Brooklyn Blast, which is more citrusy/juicy and not as hefty, but it would easily hold me over .

I am able to fly around the country for very cheap (mom is high up at Delta) if I were fly into Vermont would it be as easy as getting off the plane, going to the nearest liquor store and grabbing a case? Or is a bit of searching required? Thanks

well I lived in Vermont most of my life if you are headed there, and yes I literally lived across the street from the airport. The airport was actually was purchasing my house lol. If you head to Vermont I can tell you where you can find it. It will be out back most of the time and you have to ask for it but I know of three places other than the Alchemist where it is pretty easy to get. That was a long answer is yes but in the places I know of you have to ask. I brought a case to my friend in Florida when I moved down here a few months ago and the store sold it to me without a problem.

Those bees in a frappe sound really great. I have not seen them around here in Fl though. I will defiantly start searching them out. I think the hoppy sweet is what she liked most about it. I am not sure why I liked Hopslam. It wasn't as "dank" and bitter as Heady, and it was also like 95 here in FL. maybe that helped

I haven't seen Great Lakes here but I will keep a look out in a few weeks to see if I can get any. I would be willing to pick some up to give it a try and I am sure she would be more than happy!

The last time I had Hopslam I thought it smelled like straight pineapple juice. Never had anything like it before or since. I too would welcome an apt comparison.

90 minute ipa maybe? Hoppy, heavy and sweet. Different hop profiles but similar enough you might like it.
