They may have been clueless, sure that's possible. Not likely but possible. Now they know.

So, I actually READ the label and, uhhh, it doesn't seem like it's glorifying Satan. I mean, it starts off saying Faustian bargains have consequences. It WARNS against indulgence saying, essentially, "hey, I'm a big decadent alcoholic beer - better be careful with me!" People may not find it clever but it is using the concept of a Faustian bargain as a warning. Maybe it's too tongue in cheek for some, seems in a mainstream ... certainly more so than Surly's Pentagram.

Personally, I'm tired of dogs on labels. But if I feel the need to bemoan the canine iconography of labels I'll probably create a separate thread about it ...

I still don't get how the very tame satanic imagery is offensive, but oh well more for the rest of us. Granted only a few dozen cases may make it out of Alaska and who knows wether I'll see it in the bay area.

Who would have thought that a 100% Brett-fermented barley wine could be so high in alcohol and taste that good?

oh yeah, i know they're both out there, and judging by various check in dates, i suspect anchorage was "first" although checkin are not always indicative of who might "own" the name. spending too much time laughing at the derp in the golden road/rod thread:confused:

    I will gladly drink both.

While Ohio laws drive me insane sometimes, that will not dissuade me from hunting this beer down. I need a bottle or two of this.

    Wow, sounds so good...!

I won't be finding any of that here in China, and I most likely will not see any in Salt Lake City next month when I am home for a visit. I'll just keep salivating....

Explain these laws, I never knew Ohio had some Draconian alcohol laws. I am from Utah and they have some pretty backwards alcohol laws too.

Being offended by "Deal With The Devil" strikes me as analogous to an atheist being offended by beers like 4 Hands Resurrection IPA or Avery's The Reverend and Salvation. Or just look at Cathedral Square brewing, which has brands like Ave Maria, Hail Mary and Repent Rye. Or the He'Brew line from Shmaltz Brewing.

Does that really sound like a reasonable reaction to you? I mean, please feel free to purchase as you like, but that just doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

It's true that not everyone who drinks beer is an atheist, but I guess I'm failing to see how a label/beer name could be considered "alienating" to anyone unless it's something blatantly insulting, like "Jesus The Asshole", "Christianity Sucks" or something else that is similarly absurd. I mean, it's pretty clear that "Deal With The Devil" isn't an attempt to glorify Satan or Satanism, but rather is simply a play on the whole notion of temptation and consequences for your decisions.

Which raises an interesting point--I think you're over-simplifying the reason that devil iconography is used frequently in alcohol branding: rather than just a way of saying "I'm so cool and hardcore", it's more likely because of the fact that alcohol consumption is a temptation. The symbolism of the devil goes far beyond being a foil of evil for Christianity, and temptation is one of the major themes. It may be a little bit lazy/easy, but there is definitely a reason the two are associated that goes beyond purveying a generic "hardcore" image.

An atheist wouldn't be offended by those labels. Just like I wouldn't be offended by an image of a dragon.

What I said earlier isn't supposed to make total sense to you. In fact, if you understood completely, I would be totally shocked and confused. That's not a knock on you either, I'm just sayin.

edit: btw, Avery isn't a very good example of 'holy' labels, being that they also have White Rascal but I see the point you were attempting to make
