Does anyone know if and where they can be found in the Lancaster area? Singles or sixes by preference but cases if need be. Looking for doppelbock or hefe dunkel in particular. Thanks for any help.

Can we expand the distribution of this question? Has anybody located Andechs in SEPA?

    Cheers!

Haven't seen it by the case, but the dopplebock dunkel is available by the bottle for on-site consumption at TJs in Paoli. It may be that they will sell them for take out, but I've not checked on that.

FWIW- they are packaged in 500ml bottles, so you are either going to get singles or cases, but no sixers.

I am a bit ashamed to report this but...

I was food shopping at my local Wegmans (King of Prussia) earlier tonight and I perused the beer section (I was hoping to find a four-pack of Mikeller/Sly Fox Keeper Pils. Lo and behold: bottles of Andechs beers in the Germany section. I purchased three bottles (2 Doppelbock and 1 Hefeweizen). The good news is that I 'found' them. The less than good news; they are 5 bucks a bottle. As I was approaching the cashier I saw the beer dude and I mentioned that I found the Andechs and I asked: did you just get these in? He informed me that they have been carrying this beer for a few months. My response was what!?! I had asked many times in the past when they would be getting Andechs (the answer was always that they knew nothing about Andechs). I basicallly gave up asking after 2-3 conversations over a 1+ month time period.

Oh well, they have them now! Woo-Hoo!

    Cheers!

You are only paying $1 more than me, so it's not so bad, all things considered.

Michael, you live in the New York metropolitan area, one of the most expensive places on the planet. If I am paying more than you then I am getting ripped!

I noticed that one of the two US importers, S&H Brands, as well as a number of retailers with computerized receipts based on barcode "scans" list the brand by the full name of "Kloster Andechs" - so if they're just looking under "A" or even going off memory, they might not automatically make the connection.

So are these German offerings worth it? I too have never tried one.

The Doppelbock is perfect, and the Dunkel Weissbier is amazing (and could be the real sleeper of the bunch).

Keith, I bought twp bottles of the Doppelbock and one bottle of the Hefeweizen. I have not tried them yet but I am 99.9% sure that my 'evaluation' will be that they are very, very good beers but not worth 5 bucks per bottle.

I will send either send you a beermail (or post on this thread if it is still active) with my tasting thoughts.

    Cheers!

All, for what it's worth, in my opinion they are very good but maybe as @JackHorzempa mentioned, borderline on the price...

I guess I have the benefit of buying them when visiting Germany and paying ~ 0.60€ per bottle :grinning:

Thus far, I've had the Weissbier Hell, Spezial Hell, Weissbier Dunkel, Doppelbock Dunkel, and Bergbock Hell- and for my personal preferences that's my ranking order as well, with the first two being a virtual tie. Haven't had the chance yet on the Vollbier Hell and the Export Dunkel to complete their lineup... Also have been to their restaurant in the shadows of the Frauenkirche in Munich- excellent place!

Should anyone be interested in the other offerings that aren't making it to the states yet, perhaps we can make something happen. The local to my visits brewery, Hoepfner, has some nice offerings as well.

    Cheers all!

Is the Doppelbock better than Celebrator in your opinion? Lots of that floating around right now, I just picked up a 4 pack last week.

Thanks Jack, let us know how you like them.

Keith, despite not having tasted the Andechs beers yet, you might think they are worthwhile purchases. I am a HUGE fan of Celebrator but my local Wegmans wants 15 bucks for a 4-pack of 11.2 ounce bottles; that translates to $22.50 for a 6-pack (which is not even quite a true 6-pack since the bottles are only 11.2 ounces). Paying over 20 bucks for even a great beer like Celebrator is insanity (to me).

Heretofore my Doppelbock money has gone to Troegs and Victory who make quality Doppelbocks for about 10 bucks a 6-pack.

    Cheers!

P.S. I attended a Phillies game this past Sunday and I took note that some of the beer kiosks had 16 ounce cans of Troegs Troegenator. I almost bought one but I drank draft Sunshine Pils instead.

I'd say they use two different approaches, so it's hard to compare directly. They are both on the same level, that's for sure. The Andechs is more of a 'standard' approach, rich melanoidins with a pumpernickel-like undertone with hints of dried fruits, but elegantly constructed and perfectly balanced. Celebrator has more of that dark malt, molasses and spiced cake complexity going for it. I could see going for either one, depending on my mood at the time.
