I just opened a 2008 Angel's Share (Brandy Barrel) or so I thought...

As we are drinking it, I notice that the label seems a bit weird, so I take a look. Underneath the label, is another Angel's Share label! The three label pieces that LA puts on bottles has a second underneath.

The under label does not have a year, the label with the ABV differs (the top one says 12.5, the bottom says 11.5), and the back label differs as well (the top indicates brandy but the under just says "oak barrels".

Anyone else had this happen? I bought it at Toronado SF about a year ago, and this seems very strange to me.

If it tastes good and is carbonated, consider yourself incredibly lucky and ask no further questions. If it's flat or infected, consider the extra label the cherry on top of the " you got burned" package.

It's fairly flat, but this beer is still so fucking good.

I am just wondering what vintage/type I actually got.

Type is pretty easy, no? Did it taste like brandy or bourbon?

    750 ml?

The 11.5% was the 2007 label. No idea why it would be underneath a 2008 label...

I have a bottle with the exact same thing. I was considering making a thread but am so lazy. I also thought the bottle was terrible.

Yet again, we disagree on the merit of aging AS. I loved it.

More importantly, it seems like this is not just something on my bottle. I wonder if they labeled 2007 bottles but didn't have enough beer to fill them, so they used them on the 2008 and covered up the labels.

I've had a few over 3 years old and all were shadows of themselves fresh.

It's damn good when fresh on tap, or in a properly carbed and not-infected bottle. Oxidation doesn't help it, and you lose a ton of barrel character (at least in my experience.)

I have had it fresh many times on tap and in bottle (even opened my AS Grand Cru before infection set in!), and I still thought it tasted great with the 5 years. Not a ton of barrel character on the forefront, but I really enjoyed it. Reminded me of Fred from the Wood (also flat) and what Great would taste like without carbonation. The lack of carbonation did not bother me at all.
