To be totally honest, I prefer to try new beers that I haven't tried. Not always because I "heard" they were good. There is just something in me that screams "TRY SOMETHING NEW!" When I go to the liquor store.

In fact, I spend quite some time looking around when I go, like a child in a candy store. I just never knew there was a community for people who enjoy beer just because it's good. I don't drink to get drunk, always, I just enjoy beer.

I spend about 30 minutes to create a mixed six-pack every time. It's all about trying new things.

That's good, here you will find help and a good resource for beer. As for recommendations there are some general ones but if you tell us what state youre from then we will know the distribution better also any style you like or want introduction to.

They let you do that!? The liquor stores near me have signs that say "Please do not mix and match."

I live in Indiana, Anderson Indiana to be Exact. As for styles, I really don't have a huge preference. I've tried fruity beers, full flavor dark beers, pale ales, as long as it's new I want to try it.

Some stores do and some don't. Most dedicated beer shops will let you mix and match. Also, don't limit yourself to American beer; try some good imports too. Our inebriated brothers across the pond have been at it a bit longer than we have, and most are very good at what they do.

Yes. Halftime Beverage in Poughkeepsie, NY. Everything in the store is sold by-the-bottle. It's a phenomenal store, really is. Helped me really go all-in with craft brews.

Welcome to Whaleadvocate, I mean Beeradvocate. The best thing to keep in mind is that a whole world of great beer opens up once you stop subscribing to BMC. Go out and try something you've never tried or better yet never heard of before!

Anheuser Busch is the fucking Anti-Christ. I can't imagine how big craft beer would be without them. You may actually be able to get some KBS

FWIW - First 2 sentences were serious, second was sarcastic.

My main problem with AB is that they try and deprive us from everything craft. Whether or not you enjoy what they brew, they try and fuck over the people that don't. That's extremely frustrating and annoying.

Let them brew a shit product all they want. But, when they start being the reason why distribution is cut for in markets for craft, or a certain craft brewery is swallowed up, it's reprehensible.

Frankly, posts like this re a huge part of the problem around here.

A TON of adjuncts? A TON relative to what? Simply useless drivel without quantification...

You can say what you want...I'd like to see any proof you have that American lager is as bad for you as soda.

Good sir, take it easy. No one is being adversarial in this post. I will readily admit that the soda comment was hyperbole, and mayhaps my quantification of the adjuncts used by the Big Three is off by some factor. I still maintain that good craft is healthier than American lager. See here:

Now let's all calm down and get back to the business of good beer. Cheers.

Yeah, I would like to see what reviewers from a journal on nutrition would have to say about statements like that. Citing blog posts on scientific matters is generally dumb; believing them is deluding yourself.

Based on the arguments made, no beverage is healthier or unhealthier than plain water.

I feel as if this segue has gotten far astray of the original topic. I will at once admit fault with all statements I may have presented as fact. To get back on track, I will say that if anyone likes BMC, feel free. My goal is not to convert anyone, merely to extoll the awesomeness of craft. If you don't want to drink it, more for me.

From the original question, a big difference is the purpose of commercial brews versus craft brews...
The high-gravity big guys (BMCs, etc.) are brewing a beer to be clean and non-offensive, something anyone can drink, not unlike the Golden Arches, Chef Boyardee or Kraft Mac & Cheese. It's usually served "ice cold" to provide refreshement, rather than flavor, because some people don't like actual flavor. They're very good at what they do, but their efforts go into consistency and cleanliness...not creativity or flavor.
On the other hand, whereas craft brewers are trying to create flavorful, creative brews that may or may not appeal to everyone, but at a minimum, someone. You'll find some you like and some you don't...and that's ok. As many have posted, part of the fun is trying new things. After all, who eats the same thing for every meal, morning, noon & night?
As for the industry & Beer Wars, part of the issue with the big guys, particularly AB, is that "the fix is in" and they use their industry, lobby and distribution power, often ruthlessly, at the detriment of the little guys they perceive as a threat....which limits consumer access to many of the craft beers.

All the beer shops near me, and even most grocery stores have a mix six option. I would have never tried as many beers as I have if I had to commit to a full six pack of something. I take it you have to go to "liquor stores" for beer? Or there are no places like Total Wine around?

"Obvious" answer? Maybe - but is it really true? Anheuser-Busch-InBev brews and/or imports a lot of beers. ALL of those beers "taste bad"? There are reasons why many beer drinkers avoid the A-B brands (I have for over 3 decades) but few would suggest that it's really based strictly on the taste of their beers.

How can something which has no taste, taste bad?
