So I have a buddy that doesn't really do internet forums that has Dark Lord on his bucket list of beers to try. He's not familiar with variations or anything, he just knows about it and wants to try it.

So just from observing and reading, it appears that non BA Dark Lord has gone down hill in recent years. I want to trade for a non BA version but I want to us to drink a good beer at the same time. At this point any BADL is well out of my reach, so can you guys clue me in on what is believed to be one of the last "good" years of non BA Dark Lord and how tough it would be to acquire it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I really like 2010 dark lord. Didn't like 2011 or 2012 as much, but haven't had them recently. Lots of hubub about 2009 these days.

I don't think 2010 would be too hard to get - from your ISO's, I'd guess something in the ball park of Ivan+Abyss would do it.

Something can't go downhill when it started at the bottom.

It's always been a polarizing beer. Personally, the last time I had the 2011 it was actually really nice, despite the fact that I did not like it fresh. Definitely would not trade for a 2012 though. I'm 0'fer on those so far...

I'm still confused how people think the regular DL can suck so hard, but people are pissing their pants trying to get the BADL. Sounds like these barrels must be magic! I'm thinking of mixing some bourbon and soy sauce and see if tastes like a magic pixie drink.

And I've actually enjoyed all the DL bottles I've tried, though typically with a couple years on them.

Try Bourbon DL and get back to me. It really is magic.

Agreed, I was able to try the Vanilla Bourbon DL at the Hunahpu's release and it was incredible

You'll need the secret ingredient, cornstarch, to thicken it up.

I had a 2009 Dark Lord at a tasting earlier this year and it was outstanding. No idea on more recent vintages although I'd happily try any of them.
