These guys are going to open a 20 barrel brewhouse and tap room south of Grays lake this fall. Des Moines needs a hometown hero like this. Des moines has plenty of brew pubs but no Brewerys! So far everyone opens up outside of the metro and ships there beer in. Peacetree and Madhouse are good examples of this trend. When you look around 2012 is shaping up to be a great year for Iowa beer!

Agreed- I'm looking forward to this, since I've had a number of homebrews from these gentlemen that were pretty good. On the other hand I am very skeptical of Exile Brewing, opening up in the west of downtown. Of the 3 beers they listed as production only one peaks any interest- sounds like to me they are trying to pull off the "gateway" mentality to putting out beers......or at least that is excatly what the owner said....terrible.

Sounds great! Glad to see even more beer options coming to town. I just hope they're outside the flood plain.

Always glad to see more local beers. Hope they are better than Madhouse, though.

jlpred55 - The three beers they mentioned in the blog were a "multi grain wheat", a pale ale and a DIPA. Sounds pretty good to me. /shrug

Incorect- the three beers they mention are Munich Gold, German Pale Ale, and Honey Blonde Lager. I think you are talking about someone else. Here is a link with comments from the owner second to the last paragraph http://dmjuice.desmoinesregister.co...Turning-a-home-brewed-passion-into-a-business

Lol, that's kind of funny. YOU'RE talking about someone else. That's RJ Tursi and Exile brewing that is doing those beers in the article you linked. I'm not sure what Confluence will be brewing, but they mentioned the ones I put in my post in their blog:

REALLY!!! Dude, you need to read my previous post. I commented on Confluence and then Exile. Then you picked out my comment on Exile and attributed it to Confluence...here I will cut and paste my first post in this thread for ease of reading and so you don't have to scroll so far, BTW for reference. it is the 3rd post in this thread. I thought it was pertinent since we were talking about new iowa breweries...

I thought Madhouse was the worst brewery in the world, then I had an Angry Cedar Brewery Chocolate Porter the other day :grimacing: ... I seriously hope somebody in this state can step up the craft game (other than TG which actually makes quite a few good beers).

TG should now be counted as a Wisconsin Brewery because there calendar is full of WI tap take overs. Mean while the rest of Iowa sits and waits for a taste! I hope they show up in Des Moines for craft beer fest because my taste buds are waiting!

ROFL. Dammit, now I'm the one who looks like a moron. I did mistake your Exile comments for Confluence comments. Sorry about that.

Anyway, I have not really found any Iowa breweries that I'm really in love with. Peacetree does a couple beers I like, Back Pocket does a couple I like and Millstream does too. That's about it.

Have you had any Toppling Goliath? Seriously, not just a good Iowa Brewery but a great one. I would venture to guess that if they keep it up they will be a great regional brewery in the not so distant future.

    JediMatt- no sweat.

Yeah I really wish Toppling Goliath would get a tap or 2 at El Bait Shop. On another note- I will be staying close to TG June 8-9 so I plan to partake in a few sessions there.

No, the worst Iowa brewery is Hub City. I've had 6 from there, they ranged from mediocre to crap. As for Madhouse, Hopburst is terrific, and the Coffee Stout is quite good.

I forgot about Hub City. It is the worst. However, I 100% disagree on the Madhouse Coffee Stout.

I never managed to try any Hub City offerings, but I'll make sure to stay away if they are worse than Madhouse. It's such a bummer. I like supporting local breweries, but so many of ours make bad beer! I tried Twisted Vine at the Beerfest last summer and could hardly choke down the sample I got. :slight_frown:

I second the comment on Twisted Vine.! I was so excited to try there stuff but was kind of let down. I am willing to give them a second chance at craft beer fest on a few weeks.

I noticed no one has mentioned Back Pocket here? I think there solid like TG only alot more accessible. I see tonight on Facebook they have got there brew house installed. I am also excited for this one to!

I mentioned that I liked a couple of their beers. I've had their hefeweizen and their helles lager and they were both pretty tasty. Just can't get them around here unless you go to El Bait Shop.

A quick look around facebook shows 5-10 breweries "In planning" around Iowa and somewhat near being actually able to open.
