The new Brewery 401 is now Crooked Current Details [and more Rhody beer news] here:: http://providence.thephoenix.com/food/158790-whats-in-a-name/
Anyone had any of their beers? I haven't seen them anywhere. I'd like to give them a shot regardless of what their name is (though I think focusing on the "corrupt past" is a little lame. Rhode Islanders like to think we're the only state/country that deals with political corruption. It happens everywhere.).
Yeah, kind of a silly way to brand your beer, but hey whatever. I will try it and hope it is good. We definitely need some good breweries in this state instead of the long list of mediocre to poor ones (with a couple of exceptions).
I've had it, but from what I remember the bartender told me it was a "branded 401" and not brewed in RI IPA. Embarassed, but I can't really remember where/when I had it, but I know I did. She told me they change the area code depending on the bar that's selling it (CT, MA, etc). 99% sure it's the same one. It's no Tendril.
Crooked Current will make its debut at the RI Brew Fest on 7.20 and will be selling growlers/offering tours + tastings @ their 560 Mineral Spring Ave, Pawtucket site soon after
Yeah I saw the (401) IPA in stores one time and was super confused that it was a Stony Creek Brewery out of Connecticut that brewed it. Very weird to take an out of state area code for your beer. On the one hand you are pandering to the state, but on the other hand screwing "native" breweries out of using this name. Oh well, I'll wait to taste the renamed 401 brewery on July 20...
From the Valley Breeze, a reply from Stony Creek: Stony Creek owner Manny Rodriguez said he was "unaware of any controversy" surrounding the 401 trademark. "We created our 401 India Pale Ale specifically for our neighbors in Rhode Island and it continues to sell well for us," he said. As I noted in the Providence Phoenix story, the "specific" claim is a crock: the "specifically" created (401) and the CT-"specific" (203) and (860) beers are virtually the same liquid, per the profiles on their website: they all have Cascade hops, 14.0 Plato O.G., 6.15% ABV, 53 IBUs. The ONLY difference is the color (the 401 and is 6.7 SRM, the 860 is 8.2); the 860 and 401 both list Domestic 2 Row base malt, Crisp Crystal 45, Weyermann Melanoidin, while the 203 malt list seems to be an incomplete copy/paste: "Domestic 2 Row base malt, crisp." Like kevdemers said, pandering/screwing
Rhode Island needs to step its game up. They are part of a region where the beers are World Class and sought after around the Country. It's also the closest State ffrom me. They need to make it happen!
Hi Guys, We knew the name would generate mixed feelings as some love it while others will consider it "lame". We just love that people are talking about it and geared up to try some on the 20th. Keep the discussion going no matter which side of the fence you fall on. We do want to close, however, by saying we know RI is hardly the only state to experience corruption, but studies consistently rank us at the top when it comes to this issue. Also, this in no way should be construed as any celebration of corruption as some others have also remarked, but rather us poking a little fun at ourselves here in Lil Rhody. If it were to stop tomorrow we would actually be happy to change our name for a third time. Cheers, Guys! See you all on the 20th!!
And at least we're trying to change our image here in RI. Fingers crossed! http://mobile.bloomberg.com/news/20...-rhode-island-tops-public-integrity-list.html
