St. Bernardus Abt 12, a beer that you simply can buy in the shop, is actually the same beer as the scarce Westvleteren XII. That claims Trappist expert Jef Van den Steen.St. Bernardus Abt 12 and Westvleteren XII are identical beers, trappist expert says Jef Van den Steen in the latest news. "They are according to the same recipe brewed. Even I test in a blind taste test the difference does not, "stressed Van den Steen. He dives for the newspaper back in the history. In 1946 the Abbot would have decided the Trappist beer of the Abbey no longer to deliver to shops and cafes, but just to BREW beer for their own consumption and sale to the Abbey gate. Because that got a lot of revenue was laboring, cheese maker, beer Deconinck from the near Watou a brewing license. For his company, St. Bernard, was to help the then brewing engineer with the Trappist beer brewing recipe sent to Watou. The beer that was pulled on bottles, got the name Sixtus Abt 12. The cooperation between Abbey and bierbrouwers company ended in 1992, when the name was protected and only awarded to trappist beer that was brewed within Abbey walls. "But of course remained, St. Bernardus generator rebuilding under the new name St. Bernardus Abt 12", says Van den Steen yet. "But in essence there is until today still no substantial difference between the Abbot and the Westvleteren 12 XII." At St. Bernard confirm that they use the same recipe, but they say no publicity there. "Out of respect for the brothers of Westvleteren and because we are so even though more than enough work," reads it there.
