It's true. You can drink an old school session beer all day and never get drunk. I'm not sure our spoiled palates would be able to do so without being distracted by big beers though.

I just drink more and faster when I drink sessions ...so I'm not sure if I agree : )

My maris otter/simcoe smash came out very tasty. 3.5 oz simcoe total was about perfect for a pale ale. Hop flavor was pretty balanced. You could use more if you wanted a more simcoe forward smash. I would make this one again without changes.

Windsor sounds like a good yeast choice for a session beer.

4%, eh? Hadn't heard that before, although it seems reasonable that at some point a low enough ABV would balance out hydration/drying effects between water and alcohol content.

Bud light would have a big neon sign lighting up the failboat once again, as it's 4.2%.

My version of Pliny the Toddler came out well.

    5 pounds 2 row
    3 pounds Maris Otter
    1 pound Carapils
    .5 pound of surar

Hop the hell out of it with Simcoe, Columbus and Centennial (in order of the biggest percentage used)
    Big Flameout and dryhop.
I used a half pound of hops in total.

    Mash at 154

    O.G of 1046 FG of 1012
    4.4%

I get 9.2 lbs of grain total, which could conceivably maybe possibly get me to 1.046 on my system*. Too lazy to plug it all into beersmith tho.

    * "standard" batch of 12 lbs grain for me is usually within a few points of 1.060

Well I decided to mix it up and use tettnanger, because I need to use up my tettnanger (my willamette is pretty new and pelletized, the tettnanger is older and leaf). Brewing tomorrow. US-05. I really don't know what to expect, but the grains are milled (not the corn tho, obviously) and I'm a gonna brew it. :sunglasses:

Up next after that is an IPA with magnum, bravo, tettnanger (including all three late hopping), and 6 lbs pilsner, 6 lbs golden promise, and 2 lbs munich. Following that it's gonna be another stout (this time with with Irish ale yeast) and something saisony with 3711 and tettnanger, possibly just pilsner malt for a base, and fermented at 60-64F. :grinning:

This year I made a nice English pale ale using about 90% maris otter and 10% golden naked oats. It was hopped at 60 and 15 min with whitbread goldings variety, and fermented with the West Yorkshire strain from WYeast. I don't have any of the specs handy, but I think the beer probably would have clocked in as a "Special Bitter" using the BJCP guidelines. It was pure delicious.

I brewed a Best Bitter a few years ago that was really light and refreshing:

    6.00 lbs Marris Otter
    1.00 lbs Crystal 40
    0.50 lbs White Wheat

    1.50 oz of Fuggles/Goldings Mix @ 60 minutes
    0.50 oz of Fuggles/Goldings Mix @ 20 minutes
1.00 oz of Fuggles/Goldings Mix dry hop for 10 days

    Wyeast 1028 London Ale
    Mash Temp: 152
    OG: 1.041
    FG: 1.008
    ABV: 4.3%
    IBU's: 32.8
