Each year I pick up a six pack of Lakefront - BRANDY BARREL-AGED PUMPKIN IMPERIAL ALE. I thought I read somewhere it was aged in a barrel two years this time. Used to drink southern tier but had a bad experience with a few bottles. Tasted like a cleaning liquid in both bottles I had.

I can tell myself that Pumking isn’t a sad shell of itself, and it’s just in my head because I wasn’t ready for that aroma/taste the first time. I cannot, however, think of a reason why Warlock was changed. That was the best one, had that same aroma but in thicker stout form. Aside from those mentioned, Flying Dog The Fear is decent, and don’t sleep on Pinchy Jeek Barl by Anderson Valley if that’s still a thing. Best advice is to see what your locals are cooking up. The best pumpkin beers I had last year were from Tired Hands and Neshaminy Creek.

I won't turn my nose up if offered one. I prefer my own I brew each year. Just hate to see them before mid September......

I generally like the use of Pumpkin in beer. The ones I enjoy have pumpkin flavor that tastes like real pumpkin, have a significant flavor contribution of pumpkin, and have light amounts of spice. Since these are the most difficult to produce (due to the processing required to use fresh pumpkins and the problems caused by large amounts of real pumpkin in the mash) they are infrequently made this way. Lots of pie spice and little/no pumpkin are common.

I also enjoyed the two mixed ferm pumpkin beers I tried, though I can't remember their names

I enjoy a good pumpkin-flavored beer during autumn. Last year's Basic Becky from Prairie was outstanding! I hope they brew it again. And I hope that Carton brings back its Pumpkin Cream Ale.

I forgot about Basic Becky. Great beer but I almost never buy Prairie anymore because of the price.

I’ll echo @Mister_Faucher and others as I do really enjoy Elysian Night Owl. Gotta give a lot of love to my local favorite Jacked Up O’Lantern from Roundabout - it’s a coffee stout with pumpkin and it’s amazing. Outside of these and a handful of others I don’t really drink much pumpkin beer, but I do enjoy some here and there each year.

I love pumpkin beers and always will. The fact that they get hate just makes me like them more, as nine times out of ten the people hating them like beers that I don't really care for e.g. regular IPAs.

Anyway, I am a big fan of New Belgium Atomic Pumpkin, Pumking (but the coffee variant is my favorite), DFH Punkin...the list goes on.

They’re all spices, find a beer with the spice combo you like and your set. I’m not so sure the base beer matters all that much when your dousing it with cinnamon, allspice, clove etc, and some pumpkin. Imo pumpkin is very mild tasting at best, more so on the nose, but imo they’re mostly too sweet and over spiced, and I get heartburn. It’s completely subjective, and if you like them tis the time of year, and enjoy. Probably the most polarizing style out there.

What is the "base" style of these beers? Are they all chockful of flavorings and adjuncts?

I say it every year: There is Schlafly Pumpkin Ale and then there are all other pumpkin ales.

They definitely go well with the cooler weather. I can't seem to stomach them in the summer.

OK I will admit that 4Noses Pump Action is pretty tasty for this style.

It's 85 degrees and 70% humidity right now. I've been drinking hard seltzer all night, and I couldn't stomach something with such savory spicing as a pumpkin ale tonight. But believe me, the first sub 50 degree night I will be popping open an imperial stout. Frankly, I'm craving one; moreover, I'm craving sweater weather.

Still way too early for pumpkin beers. Shouldn't be out till October.
Pumpkin beers are one of only two styles I don't like.
I've only had one pumpkin beer that I;ve actually enjoyed - and it wasn't even the beer itself; I've had it since and didn't care for it.
It was Smuttynose Pumpkin, at a beer dinner. It was paired with butternut squash ravioli (which I also don't like - the squash, not the ravioli part.) HOwever, the two paired together extremely well.

The only pumpkin beer I ever liked was brewed by Diane at the Wellhead Pub in Artesia, NM, probably about 10 years ago. What made it so delicious is that it got infected and she ended up with a keg of sour pumpkin beer she couldn't sell. Desperate to help her I graciously accepted the gift of a keg of sour beer. My son and I bottled it, and even his Bud Lite drinking friends loved it.
The worst beer I've ever tried, bar none was DFH Punkin.

I do not dislike pumpkin beers, actually bought a bunch of singles for a few years to taste test a bunch, and there are some decent ones out there.
Although last few years I've stuck with Octoberfest and other german lagers in the fall. I might drink a pumpkin or two if my wife wants some in our fridge, but I'm more likely to find a smoked beer or some porters if I want some different flavors
