My thoughts as well. I kind of grew up on Washington/Oregon beer in the early '90s and didn't really start paying attention to what was going on anywhere else until pretty recently. So I'm not sure when or where this self-congratulatory attitude of "Hey, look at us, we're brewing beer!" started. To me it's always seemed like kind of a low-profile, workmanlike craft (albeit a well-respected one). I view beer kind of how I view other artisanal products—cheese, cured meats, etc.—and I don't know whether many of those guys do much more than offer the occasional tour of the facility.
