I wasn't, but through a strange combination of circumstances discovered an old buddy has a company called "Sean's 1000 Watt" which makes mesh strainer bags, for making hashish out of what I learned also today is termed "trim and stems"...legal here in Colorado btw...

Anyhow, they shake this stuff up with dry ice in a mesh bag over a clean tabletop & the net result is a sticky resinous powder which they then form into little, I guess, lumps of hash.

The relevance to home brewing, to me, is wondering if anybody has ever done this to concentrate whole hops into a sort of hop extract.

I thought you were going to say you can use the mesh bag for BIAB. I would love to hear if anybody has made hop hash though. Might be a good way to preserve hops for storage

Well they would make nice, if expensive, hop strainers, but Home Depot paint department has me covered there.

So that process extracts pure THC from the trim and stems? Or in our case, could extract the lupulin from the hops? That could work. I know bubble hash is strong from experience... you only need like a booger sized piece to do the trick. I'm sure it could work with hops as well. Could make for a dank IPA! And since it's almost pure lupulin I guess you wouldn't have to worry about staling over time, but I don't know a whole lot about that process. I'd be very curious to see if this could work

I am not sure why I have not thought of this before. I have a friend who makes hash from time to time and I think I see a project in store for next fresh hop season.

There's a couple beers made from hop "hash".. I know Sweetwater locally has a year round DIPA that is called Hop Hash, that they use Citra and Simcoe hash in. It's a concentrated block of lupulin and whatnot from the pellet processing machines after a run. They scrape it up and sell it commercially. Not sure if there's enough around to sell to us homebrewers though.

Cambridge Brewing Company made a double IPA from straight Simcoe hash a couple years ago. Basically the sticky scrapings from the pellitizing mill compressed into a brick. The brewer said it was actually a real pain to work with and basically had to shave it into the kettle with a box cutter.

I believe Sixpoint Resin is made using a similar process.

I'm from/ live in CO as well and am very familiar with bubble hash and its production.

You can do the same with hops, for all intents and purposes hops and Mj are pretty much the same.

I did not however use dry ice all that often; it works but I preferred using liquid oxygen diffused into the mix (with lots of ice) and achieved much better results all around. Not saying you shouldn't use dry ice, it's just fine.

If you want to try it and need some tips just shoot me a beer mail and I can give you some pointers.

I'll tell you right now that the biggest rookie mistake in the bubble process is not being gentle with processing your material.

I would use leaf only- NOT Pelletized hops.

Oh and don't buy those expensive bags unless you are going to do MJ processing; just get a paint strainer and some silk screen material and you'll get good results with hops without breaking the bank.

I've not done bubble "hops" before but I am going to when I get my bulk hops For the season; thanks for the idea!

Not all intents and purposes...

I was just about to make a note via edit; knowing someone would inevitably make this remark...

    They are incredibly similar.

    Sorry man...had to do it.

Yeah, similarities are oft noted...they just happen to be pretty different in the department off intents and purposes...:stuck_out_tongue:
