At the beach this past week we ran out of homebrew and for the first time in a year or so we had to buy beer at a store. The wife picked out a pack of All Day IPA and she really enjoyed it more than in the past...and all I've heard since is that I need to brew a clone of it. I've searched and seen a handful of clone recipes online (on BA and elsewhere) and they are all over the place so I thought I'd ask you kind folks if anyone has a recipe they think is pretty close. I've heard its got like 2lbs of crystal grains and only around 50% base malt, supposedly the brewers at Founders mentioned that somewhere in an interview. I've heard a lot of folks mention that it's heavy on Simcoe and Amarillo but some clone recipes I've seen have neither.

My point is, I'd really appreciate it if anybody has a good recipe I can use...thanks!

It always struck me as a very thin-bodied and dry IPA. I doubt that there's that much crystal malt in the grist (assuming a 5 gallon batch). I actually wouldn't be surprised if it were a single malt beer.

Zymurgy had an All day IPA clone recipe posted last year or the year before. I've never brewed it , and don't know how accurate it is. If you don't have access, and want me to dig it up let me know.

Awesome....I've got a membership and can dig it up in the digital issues if I can't find my physical copy. Do you happen to know which issue it was it in?

I don't know why I didn't read on down to the tips given below the recipe. Thanks!

I want to say it was one of the "Best Beer" issues. Now I'm curious, might look into it.

The first one I had was thin, very thin. That was years back.

Recently I had one with good mouthfeel,,not thin. No idea what they did in the years between.

I just want to re-enforce what Jeff posted. All Day IPA was very thin to me a number of years ago. I drank some of these beers a few months ago on a ski trip and it was still on the thin side but not as thin as I remembered in the past.

They sell this beer in 15-packs at a reasonable price. I recognize that the wife requested a homebrewed version of this beer but if t was me I would just buy my wife another 15-pack. It seems like there is a lot of differing grains in this beer's grain bill; a tough beer to clone.

It wouldn't surprise me that there are some process 'tricks' for this beer as well.

    Cheers!

At GR NHC, Kosmicki said it was 50% base malt and other things like carapils, other specialty grains, and adjuncts IIRC. No more details were given.

Jeff, given this input do you think you could formulate a clone recipe?

    Cheers!

This is in the link @GreenKrusty101 posted above...

"My notes from Jeremy at NHC - 50% Rahr two row and 20% flaked oats. 5 other grains make up the remaining 30%, but all he noted was Simpsons crystal malt (no amount or color given) and carapils. Mash high.

All Amarillo and Simcoe hops including mash hop and FWH with Amarillo. No bittering addition - but there are 5 other additions starting at 30 min. Assumed that number also included at least one dry hop addition.

Fermented with 1056 as noted above."

With that info you could come close. He likes carapils, so it is probably in there too.

1056 is the house yeast as noted above. The Chico strain is widely used, so it was not a surprise.

I'm no longer a Northern Brewer user, but I think this is their shot at something like All Day...the grain bill doesn't seem to agree with what's mentioned above, but the hop schedule seems like a good stab at it, with a little substitution to save them money compared to all Simcoe and Amarillo.

Yeah, I clicked on Barry's link and took note of the complicated grain bill.

So, 30% of the grain bill s constituted by 5 grains. One of those grains is Simpsons crystal malt but which one (i.e., which Lovibond)? It seems like Carapils may be one of the five. What are the other three? Do you just decide that each of the five are evenly distributed among the 30%?

Too many unknowns as far as I am concerned.

    I will repeat:

"They sell this beer in 15-packs at a reasonable price. I recognize that the wife requested a homebrewed version of this beer but if t was me I would just buy my wife another 15-pack. It seems like there is a lot of differing grains in this beer's grain bill; a tough beer to clone."

I hear ya Jack  I just prefer to brew as much of the beer I drink as possible. I'm good if the grain bill isn't exact, I think there's enough there to make something VERY similar...and that's good enough for my first try at it. I've already got the ingredients at home so I might as well just add this into my upcoming brew rotation.

I am confident that you will brew a very good beer.

Best of luck to you and I will have my fingers crossed that your wife will be pleased by your efforts.

    Cheers!

Founders was featured on The Session on The Brewing Network a few months ago. I recall then discussing All Day IPA, but I don't remember any details. It may be worth a listen if you are still interested.

Just finished a small starter of WLP-007 that I will use tomorrow for a session IPA with 15% oatmeal, 5% Carastan...and 60% continental Munich...in 1 week I'll brew it's big brother...a IIIPA with the cake, some rye, rice, and wheat (but no sugar)
