Has this on tap at Luella's in Asheville last weekend and it was delicious. Not many reviews on BA and it was not on tap at the brewery. It seems to be pretty new since the first reviews were fall of '14. Anybody know the story behind it and how often it will be available?

I had some at the brewery last month and later off a growler station here locally. I loved it, I had it back to back with Freak and I really couldn't say which one I liked better. I think Freak is a little more Dank and Pernicious more fruity. Both excellent, though.

They just changed the name right? I thought it used to be East Side or Die.

Yes definitely more fruity which I prefer. Also, one of the driest finishes of any IPA I've ever had which I thought was great.

A name change would make sense.

It's not as good as Freak IMO, but a hell of a lot better than Hop Burglar. The name change probably is why there aren't many ratings for it. I think they are making it year-round now or intend to at some point.

Didnt notice this until this thread. Looked at untappd and it changed automatically on there from east side or die.

The only one that I like as much is Lynnwood's Hubris. I enjoy Freak way more than Hop Drop and everything else though.

I think Freak is way over-rated, and would drink a Hop Drop any day over it.

IMO saying one is overrated opposite of not your preference is two different things. I prefer it. But doubt it is "overrated"

Hop Drop is just too heavy and syrupy for me. It actually seems like it's higher ABV than Freak, but it's not. Freak is just a lot crisper and cleaner, which is the style of hoppy beer I prefer.

My preference is for Hop Drop, but I also think Freak is over rated. I rarely, if ever, order it at Wicked Weed. I definitely prefer East Side or Die, and I also prefer Green Man Rainmaker. I'm not saying Freak isn't a good beer, but I do feel that the label of best IPA in NC is over rating it.

Nails it^. All about preference. Love a crisp WC style over those with more malt backbone.

Had a growler of it last weekend. it was good, but a bit onion-y.

Being a non IPA fan, borderline hater, I can drink Freak, I have a harder time with Hop Drop. For me, if you give me an IPA and expect me to not look sick, like i'm about to puke, Freak is the way to go. So for me, Freak is the best IPA in NC... :grimacing:

Have you ever had Freak not fresh?? A very popular, well regarded draft only beer is likely under a month every time unless a retailer holds it for some dumb reason.

I'd rate Freak of Nature #1 in NC for IPAs. Pernicious is up there, as is Hop Drop, Jade, Death by Hops, and Birdsong Higher Ground (very different and definitely malty, but I love it).

Haven't had Jade before but have a couple bombers in the fridge. Looking forward to trying it.

Always fresh but I have had it "off" from what it is supposed to taste like.. On draft at the brewery. A handful of time. (My "only IPA drinking" father has picked up the same thing). But yea I guess it's always fresh but something happened to it a few times. No idea what. Ever had that happen also?

My luck, those "off " Freaks are probably the batch I tried and liked... I really wish I could join the rest of the IPA drinking world in their like for the style.
