Hops are a histamine trigger, sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes can happen when rubbing hops to release the aromatics. I've often had a bad day after drinking über hoppy beers.
Gosh that sounds like a terrible predicament if you like beer. But I agree, I'd stay away from beer and find another interest if you are allergic.
I started getting stomach aches from IPA’s around 2 years ago so i just completely switched back over to only buying lagers and haven’t really had an issue since. Occasionally West Coast Pilsners (that are dry hopped) will give me a stomach aches as well so I avoid those.
I keep a tissue nearby whenever I drink a beer. Runny nose, mostly. So last year I was seeing an ENT guy for a throat hoarseness issue. I mentioned to him about the aforementioned and he instantly replied, "oh yeah, 'non-specific rhinitis', fairly common occurrence from drinking beer". Well knock me over with a feather. No idea if hop-driven, seems to happen to me over a wide spectrum of beers. I do drink a lot of hop-intense IPAs, but it seems prevalent even with the maltier brews. Will keep an eye out for that, especially as we're entering dark strong beer season.
First & short answer, no, no I do not have a hop allergy. Secondly, I too am a pepperhead but can't take about half of the capsaicin heat I used to stand years ago. Thirdly, to paraphase the good doctor Gonzo, "I can't advocate sex, drugs, rock 'n' roll, booze, vitamins & hot peppers for everybody, but it's always worked for me." I'm not sure about the booze, drugs & rock 'n' roll, but I'll always swear by the other three.....
Funny you should ask. There must be some explanation for me being a malt-head; I'm allergic to hops heaped into the brew. But I hope I'm not allergic to yeast. That would be terrible!
I´ve had significant allergy-like reactions to some sour ales over the years. Much as I may enjoy them, I think that some yeast strains impact me. But no reactions at all with hops, neither drinking hoppy brews nor handling them in homebrewing or visiting breweries.
I've carried a handkerchief (actually, a cotton bandana) all my adult life - right rear pocket, along with a comb. Had a lot of those types of allergies (cats, dust, pollen) as a kid though they don't bother me as much these days. But don't tell your MD you "outgrew them" - they say that doesn't happen - whatever. Comes in handy for lots of other reasons during the day but, if I'm home, I'll still grab a tissue, paper napkin or even a paper towel rather than use it as a "handkerchief".
HEY! I was told as a 4-5-6 year old yung-un that I had an allergies to cat hair, dog hair (which was why I wasn't allowed to have a dog until I was almost a teenager) cow hair (?!?) and dew on the morning grass(?!?) and LO and BE-hold, apparently I grew out of all of 'em around the age of 13-14 or so....soooo, I'm livin' proof you CAN outgrow your allergies. "C'mere, Checkers..........".......(esoteric Nixon joke........)
I have a buddy who pinpointed his runny nose to Amarillo hops. His nose runs like a river every time he has a Founders Red's Rye. I'm 56 now and I get stuffed up when I'm drinking certain beers. I have suspected it was a certain hop or two but I haven't done the detective work to narrow it down.
Not me, but my drinking buddy & bro in law who has cancer or almost cancer free. We both started drinking the good stuff back around 15 years ago now. No issues. About 7/8 years ago he started to have issues drinking the beers he enjoyed. He got cancer 5 years ago and has been taking very expensive meds to slow the cancer and he’s been having issues more & more lately. He definitely doesn’t drink hazys anymore as I’ve cut back on them too. We are trying to narrow it down, and it seems like a lot of the IPAs he’s had issues with has cryo hops. So he’s trying to stick to good ole hops. A lot of the cryo hops I’ve been noticing a chemical after taste. So I’ve limited them also.
Well, I initially answered no to the poll, but I'm having an IPA right now and it seems it's bothering my sinuses, causing drainage, hacking, sniffling, etc. Luckily I'm not a fan of overly hoppy beers.
You can be both! I love blackberries, and a few years ago I had been eating pints of fresh ones, and I developed an allergy. I still have blackberry beers occasionally, but they make me itch.
Well , I know this: Voodoo Ranger served in a paper cup 15 minutes ago at 35000 ft ( cabin pressurized to 6000 ft) is making me sneeze constantly, my eyes are watering, etc. I must say the low pressure creates a truly impressive head….oh, my kingdom for some proper glassware up here!
Okay, this is off topic a little, but somewhat related. Back in the late 70's (I turned drinking age in 1976) I drank Budwieser (it was a thing then) and so did my 12-yr older brother (actually he drank much more). We always had sinus issues, alergies really, stuffed up, sneasing etc... He eventually changed to Miller for calorie reasons, I changed to craft beer when it became a thing. Alergies gone.
I think I am with certain ones - IPAs, but not sure. I used to be able to drink wine by the bottle, now one glass makes me break out in hives (TMI?). Same with some certain beers. Might also be varieties though too....
