I've tried 21 different kvasses so far, and I love sampling all the variations on the main style. Sure, they all taste like dark rye bread and raisins and have the mouthfeel of Coca-Cola. But I just think that makes them all the more exotic!

So, kvass lovers out there ... how many have *you* tried?

I've tried four or five and really ejoyed them.

Some have a nice earthy herbal taste to them.

    Yeah I dig em too.

I love the non-pasteurized, chemical stuff from my youth in Kiev. The only kvass that I can get here is the pasteurized, chemical fare which is okay on its own right but pales in comparison to the real stuff in my opinion. Making your own kvass is fairly easy so maybe I should just do it one of these days.

I've had kvass one time. It was 'kay. Honestly, I had no idea it was even beer when I bought it, I thought it was some funky Euro malt drink, kinda like Malta Goya.

I've had a ton of Kombucha, brew my own and am taking a fermentation class, but the only Kvass I've had was one of these (and from your above descriptions, it tasted nothing like that):

Not really. It's not beer though, right?

I love that this thread popped up. Just the other morning at hockey, a friend of mine asked me if I'd ever heard of Kvass and showed me a picture of the 2 litre bottle that was purchased for a birthday party that someone he knew attended. Apparently they thought the item was soda and nearly started serving it to kids. The bottle was investigated further before the liquid hit Dixie cups...... No worries folks, no children were served......no animals were harmed in the making of this post....

Fab Ferments in Cincinnati makes an awesome beet kvass called Bubonic Tonic with jalapeno peppers. It also makes a tasty addition to a bloody mary

I think it's a real neat beverage, but have only had commercialized versions of it. Of course you can make your own, but wouldn't be sure it would be the right thing?

Pretty much any Russian food store will have it. My area has a big Russian population, so there are a few of them around.

I've been thinking of trying my hand at making some. Just throw some old loaves of dark rye bread in my mash tun, with maybe just a tiny bit of malt, and see what happens. For extra points I might bake the bread myself.

Kvass is basically a soda in Eastern Europe, it has basically no alcohol. It isn’t possible to get drunk from it or anything, there is problem with serving it to children. It is actually a better option than Coca-cola etc. because it isn’t a sugar bomb like soda.

I would love to try this style. I am not sure we have any Russian stores around here. Are there any commercial makers of this style?

Kvass would be a beer. Malt, water, yeast, etc.

The only Kvass I've ever seen available is Dogfish Head's. With all respect to DFH, I'd rather try a Russian version first, good or bad, to get an authentic (probably not the right word choice) representation first.
