Taste is a result of smell. And when your lips are blocking the entire pathway from the container to your mouth, you can't smell it. You take sit there and sniff at the bottle all you want, but when you're actually drinking it, the aroma just isn't getting to your nostrils. And without that, you're getting less taste. It's why food tastes bland when you're all stuffed up.

I won't criticize you for how you drink - if you prefer it from the bottle, drink it from the bottle. But objectively, you get more flavor when it's poured into a glass that puts the smell of the beer at the forefront of every sip. Whether you consider those flavors to be better than from the bottle is entirely up to you, though, and no one can fault you for that.

Head is an important part of the flavor profile and mouthfeel of the beer. Drinking beer without head is just . . . wrong.

I don't like drinking beer from bottles, but love drinking it from cans. Is that weird?

I will always want a glass unless the surroundings dictate otherwise. BBQs, parties with big giant coolers of random beerness & some times walking my dog around the lake....

Glass, 98% of the time. If I eat some fish tacos I prefer drinking Pacifico from the bottle.

I also like my beer from a bottle and with a brown paper bag over it. Ha

it depends i guess, celebration in a glass beats it in a bottle every time for me.

Besides the previously mentioned advantages of drinking beer from glassware of being able to better experience the aroma and the appearance, the other important factor of pouring beer into a glass and creating an attractive head (and, often ignored in these threads for some odd reason) is that it expels the excess CO2, making the beer less gassy/bloating/filling, and also mellows the sharpness/bite of excessive carbon dioxide.

Normally, I'd jump all over this with my strong belief that drinking from a bottle keeps you from experiencing the full aroma/flavor of a beer. However, lately, I've had to admit that All Day IPA from a can is just about as good as it is out a glass... And, then I don't have to wash the glass...

What type of glass are you usually using? A shaker pint or a snifter, SA Pint, red wine glass, or something specifically designed to enhance the beer?

Normally a tulip glass or a wine glass. I do have various other glasses in the house. Has never seemed to make any real difference. Funny - I've actually tried to prefer a glass! Like I know I'm doing it all wrong. But the more I've tried the more I've decided to just stop trying. There's as video that Alchemist owner John Kimmich did that makes the case of why a can is better than a glass. I think the theory is similar for a bottle, although I'm sure the physics are not the same. You can see it here: http://youtu.be/amgfgU5-lhs

Generally I like to pour into a glass...I like to see the color and all the bubbles rising up. However, if I'm at a party or something I tend to drink it from the bottle.

Yes I noticed this when I first started drinking Stella Artois a few years back, I would be so bloated after a few that I just couldn't drink anymore, then I tried pouring it into glass and found that I didn't get the bloat... the old light bulb flashed over my head...Eureka!!!

I use a Belgian tulip glass or shaker pint glass at home depending on the beer.
I take a Shaker Pint with me when I go to a relative's house that I know doesn't have a decent glass.
Wherever I cannot use a glass or take bottles, I take cans and drink from the can.
I don't think I've had more than 2 beers from a mug or a bottle since my macro lager days.

I walked in on someone drinking a Backwoods out of the bottle. I probably would have had less of a reaction if I had walked in on them with their pants down.

First, I'd say it takes some amount of guts to even bring this up on a "beer geek" site:wink:
But I'd agree that almost always my stouts taste better out of a glass. Only exception is when I bring some to my favorite Chinese restaurant (byo) where no real beer glasses exist. Then it's straight out of the bottle and STILL tastes good!
