I have a store less than two miles from my house. Owner lets me go in back to find stuff that may not be out on shelves yet. So I went out back to check the new delivery and got excited when I saw what I had hoped was fresh Green Flash West Coast IPA. Said bottled 11/20/11 or something. Just delivered. I realize people complain about owners often, but this isn't owners problem.

It is now... he accepted delivery of it. Now he's got to try to get credit and have it replaced by the distributor.

There's nothing stopping the owner from refusing delivery on out of code products and sending an email to Green Flash informing them that their distributor is selling 7 month old West Coast.

Why would he refuse the shipment? If you think about it, your average craft drinker isn't going to check or care about the date.

Just be happy that you have an open door to peek "behind the curtain" in a bottle shop. Not many of us have that opportunity. Old IPAs? Meh...it's not ideal but you/we can deal with it.

Is duping the "average craft drinkers" with expired beer worth the risk of losing credibility with the minority of his customers who can tell that the beer is old?

My mistake, I thought the date on it was the date it was bottled, not a "best by" date.

Well then I guess that all of the posts in these forums about freshness were written by less than average or more than average craft drinkers. A November 2011 date for beer delivered in June 2012 is stretching it by a longshot, especially in the case of a hop forward beer like Green Flash West Coast IPA. Unfortunately, there are more posts about the train wrecks [outdated beer] than the success stories [really fresh beer] just as in life when people will tell 50 of their friends and acquaintances about a bad experience and will tell 10 of their friends and acquaintances about a bad experience. Hopefully this was an isolated incident, a mistake by the distributor as to where the beer was stored in the warehouse, etc. and not a common practice.

I'm not in this thread to get into yet another ridiculous IPA falling off debate. I am just saying we are not the majority of the craft beer drinking customer base, we are simply the ones "in the know".

Does the average craft drinkee spend $11.00 on a four pack? If you spend that amount it should be as the brewer intended. If they pour that beer as is, they are going to so turned off with all the floaties, they will back drinking Schlitz before you know it.

This happens all the time at my go to store. They get something in, looks worth a try, within a month of best buy...no thanks. They even deliver stuff past due sometimes. Sure, the retailer should send it back, but the distributer shouldn't be putting it out either, as many breweries sure the heck wouldn't want their product being put on the shelves already past due. The whole system sucks.

Outside of the super beer geeks on this site, if you sit someone down with a 4 week old West Coast IPA and a seven month old West Coast IPA they aren't going to be able to tell a huge difference.

Would it be better for the owner to refuse the order? Maybe, but for your average customer I think they could still enjoy the beer. Do you think the owner should destroy any IPA in his store that is older than a month? Maybe two months?

A few weeks ago they got there first case of Southern Tier 2XIPA in 2 plus months, bottled in mid March. A month ago GFIIPA bottled in December. Positives Resin best by January of 2013 and Union Jack 3 weeks old. Guess how much Resin and Union Jack I have bought in the last month? Lots!
