Try Postcards from Dongola (6.2% nitro amber) and Remnant of the Dragon (9.2% imperial red), some of the best from Michigan from Greenbush. Not easily found though ;/

I am a fan of red ales and amber ales.

It's just, they feel like they're smack in the center of the beer spectrum. Which makes them just feel like the taste of a normal, average beer. Absolutely nothing wrong with that, but when you're thinking of your favorite beers you're thinking of beers with defining characteristics that make them stand out. That's imperial stouts, that's wheats, that's lambics and it's IPAs. It's not red ales.

Oskar Blues Red Imperial G'knight is great and I usually send Marble's Red as an extra, my first 'favorite' (how many times have I said that by now) beer as a craft brew drinker. Still a local brewery that does not get enough credit in my opinion.

I love malty red ales. I don't care for hoppy reds. It's annoying to buy a new red ale not knowing if it's hoppy or malty. Guess that's what BA reviews are for

I am a huge fan of hoppy reds/ambers, perhaps my favorite style of beer. I think the sweetness from all the crystal malts provides balance for the intense hop presence. Tocabaga as mentioned is amazing. I also really like Terrapin-Mosaic, Sierra Nevada-Flipside, and Blue Mountain-Red Zeppelin (draft only).

I love them. The mouthfeel, and its appearance in a pint glass. Wish I could get my hands on more of them, but the state of ND feels the opposite.

I'm split between a favorite style with Red Ales, Porters, and Stouts. I like each one of these more and more every time I try a new one, inspiring me to keep trying new ones.

Lagunitas Imperial Red is very good, and their Censored is highly drinkable, yet complex. Firestone Walkers' Rufus made me absolutely fall in love with the style. Knee Deep Brewing's Imperial Red is very impressive for a young brewery... you get my point.

Lagunitas Imperial Red is superb! I am a hop head and love IPAs. However, this to me, is a perfect blend of malt and hops.

Do you think that the much greater amount of caramel malts is totally unnoticeable behind the hops? Of course I think they can share lots of qualities, but I'd like to think I would not confuse a hoppy black/red with an IPA :stuck_out_tongue:

Not trying to knock the milder ambers/reds, either, there's room for everyone here :grinning:

Nostalgic moment seeing this. Front Street Pub Amber (Santa Cruz) was my first craft brew ever and so it was ambers for a long time. My next venture into "style" was a red, also from a Santa Cruz brewery ... Lighthouse? Bonny Doon? Can't remember (late 80's). Had a run of ordering reds for awhile there. Back home in San Diego here, I am a avowed hop head, so my reds tend to be imperials now: Coronado, Lagunitas, McCarthy's Bane, etc.
