http://www.northernbrewer.com/shop/.../polarware-false-bottom-for-10-gal-40081.html I have the polar ware 8 gallon kettle and am wanting to possibley purchase a false bottom and or strainer for the kettle to keep hops and trub in the fermenter at a minimum, I also currently don't have a spigot on my kettle so ill be installing one of those also. The review mentions that the false bottom doesn't work well with pellet hops and I use mostly pellets. I'm wondering if I install a stainless steel braid under the false bottom if ill get stuck run offs after chilling? Any input is greatly appreciated.
I just went to a new 10 gal setup with a false bottom in the boil kettle...pretty much a waste of money...I'm using $2 paint strainer bags for the hops now and they seem to work well.
Dang !! Maybe ill just let it settle out after cooling and rack off the trub with an autosiphon then.
Sometimes the sexy option isn't the best option. I actually just use the standard cheapie double-mesh strainer when I run the wort from kettle to fermenter. It catches damn near everything and has hooks on the backside so it rests hands free on top of the fermenter. It'll clog with 4+ ounces of options and solid cold break, but a quick blast from the hose and dunk in star San takes care of that. Just an option to consider.
. This is what I'm doing right now and more often than not I'm spilling wort all over the place as it gets dumped thru the strainer especially with ipa's
I just realized that you said you don't have a spigot. I assume then that you're pouring the wort, in which case I would expect a mess. If you install a ball valve, it's easy to avoid spilling.
that makes sense nathan... just run it out throgh the valve and some tubing at which will also allow me to stop flow to unclog my strainer...brilliant!!
