Just got back from a great little newish brewpub in my area, and they have a APA featuring Caliente hops. It is really something, and kinda got me thinking I should try to come up with a recipe. It was perfectly balanced, and unique. It was so fresh and good. Anybody use this hop variety? If so, what style and did you like it? Would you use it again? I really want to work on getting a balanced quality to my beers, this was perfect 50/50 hops/malt. Id love to make an APA or a red or something for the springtime.
since you recently had it - would you mind actually describing the hop character? I don't believe I've ever had it myself.
Its kinda hard to describe, the beer had to have had rye in it. As far as the Caliente, it was spicy and had a hint of pine in the aroma. It had a zesty citrus character, but not grapefruit or orange, more lemon- but in a good way. There was alot going on, I hate to use the word "complex" but I find myself at a loss for words. It was like Arrogant Bastards little brother, if that makes sense, haha.
