Headed to SF for Outside Lands in early August. Staying in Outer Sunset at 44th and Lawton. The area seems to have limited bars and nary a beer mapping project pin in sight. Anywhere to get good beer in that area at all? We will definitely head into the city most nights but just looking for something on the walk back from the festival or before heading into the festival. Thanks.
It's DEFINITELY worth the Muni or cab ride to the top spots (City Beer, Cellarmaker, Mikkeller, etc.) but if you want bottles to go, JM Liquors in the Outter Sunset gets a solid selection: http://www.yelp.com/biz/j-m-discount-liquors-san-francisco They also update their list on Beermenus often which is nice: http://www.beermenus.com/places/11224-jm-liquor
All the corner stores have beer, but the only decent ones you'll find at them are things like Anchor, Stone IPA, Lagunitas IPA maybe some. For good beer, the closest options are in the Richmond District in Blackwell's and Healthy Spirits, but they way and not walking distance from where you'll be. Edit: Safeway doesn't have a great selection and is still a bit out of the way from where OL is in the park and your place, but it's doable and will likely be better (and have fresher beer) than the stores you'll find in the Outer Sunset.
In the inner sunset, there is Social: http://socialkitchenandbrewery.com/ It is not walking distance but definitely easy bus/bike ride away. If you want really good beer, I follow the advice of @sourdog
I totally agree with sourdog. Take the N Judah light rail train to the Duboce street stop and walk about 4 blocks to Toronado on Haight street or continue on to Civic Center (City Beer Store, Cellarmaker) or Powell Street (Mikkeller, etc.). Have fun!
I used to live at 45th and Irving. The bars are mostly Irish Pubs with the usual suspects. They should have Anchor Steam and you might find some local hoppies like SNPA, Lagunitas IPA, and/or Racer 5. You will undoubtedly find dudes guarding the jukeboxes playing U2. If you have the time, definitely take the N up to Civic Center Station and get to Cellarmaker and City Beer store. Yesterday CBS had Hoppy Birthday, Enjoy By, Societe's the Butcher, and some other goodies. Great bottle selection too. Easy walk from the station and a couple of the less pretentious quality beer destinations in the City.
Stop by Irving Pizza at 19th and Irving and grab a slice. They usually have 5-6 Lagunitas beers on tap. Go next door to Handy Liquor and Deli. Jerry has a damn good selection for that neighborhood. Likely to find some Firestone Reserve bottles on the counter.
For bottles, you should hit up Other Avenues Market between 44th & 45th on Judah. Really good bottle selection and 10% off mixed sixers. Clancy's Market and Deli at 41st and Irving has a decent but more typical beer selection. The restaurant Outerlands also at 45th & Judah is great and always has a few good beers. Beach Burrito next door to Other Avenues is also tasty.
Yep just jump on the N and head to lower haight for Toronado or SOMA for Cellarmaker. Don't forget that Outside Lands has Beerlands and the list at the festival is exceptional.
It's not beer related but you're going to be staying a block away from Andytown Coffee Roasters. They're worth a visit if coffee is your thing!
