Plan on brewing a 5 gallaon 1.049 OG APA tomorrow. What do you think of the hop bill? 60 min Bittering - Simcoe 1 oz 30 min Flavor - Citra 1 oz 10 min Aroma - Amarillo 0.5 oz 0 min Aroma - Amarillo 0.5 oz Dry Hop - Simcoe 1 oz and Citra 1 oz Cheers
I think it sounds tasty. Most of us swear off 30 min hop additions, and Citra is really a great hop for flavor and aroma. Drop it to 10 minutes with the Amarillo. If you need to get more IBUs for bittering just add a touch at the 60 minute mark.
I like this idea I was at 62 IBUs now at 48. Looks a little better for a 1.049 OG APA. Thanks for the tip
I think it's a solid hop bill. I prefer a 25 minute "flavor addition" to a 30 minute "bittering addition" myself though. I myself keep my ibu's to about 40-45 (calculated) while using roughly 5-6oz for a 5 gallon hoppy pale ale recipe. Most of my hops are used as late additions / dry hops and I FWH. Keeping the ibu's down definitely allows for more "perceived flavor"
I've tried the 55+ range on APAs. It's not for me because it drowns out the malt. I usually shoot for 40-45. The number 48 is just fine.
On a serious note......agreed I don't use them and I'm a drummer. On a not so serious note..... only if the other musicians can't keep time
I just did an APA with citra and chinook. It came out awesome. I ended up doing a FWH, 15, 10, 5, and 0 for 30 minutes. I like the late hops a lot. I also did 3 oz total for the dry hop and the nose on it came out great.
